In short: By our ranking, the greatest archaeological wonders in Saudi Arabia are Hegra, At-Turaif District and Al Naslaa Rock. The list covers 5 archaeological wonders. Last updated 13 October 2026.
The Arabian Peninsula was crossed for millennia by caravan routes carrying incense, spices and ideas, and its oases became meeting points of kingdoms and cultures. The dry climate has preserved what they left: tombs carved into sandstone, mud-brick palaces, and rock surfaces covered with images of people and animals from the time when the region was greener.
Hegra, the southern city of the Nabataeans, preserves more than a hundred monumental tombs cut into sandstone outcrops, with carved facades and inscriptions. The At-Turaif District in Diriyah, the first capital of the Saudi dynasty, is a citadel of mud-brick palaces in the Najdi style. Al Naslaa near Tayma is a sandstone boulder split down the middle by a strangely flat crack, with ancient petroglyphs on its surface. Qasr al-Farid at Hegra is a tomb carved from a single rock and left unfinished, and the Rock Art in the Hail Region covers the cliffs of Jubbah and Shuwaymis with humans and animals.

The facades mix influences from across the ancient trading world, borrowing from Assyria, Phoenicia, Egypt and Hellenistic Alexandria, and archaeologists distinguish a local style they call the Hegra type.

The heart of the district is the Salwa Palace, a sprawling residence of five main sections built over successive generations and rising to four storeys, probably completed under Imam Saud ibn Abdul Aziz in the early nineteenth century. Around it lie the Imam Mohammad bin Saud Mosque, further palaces such as that of Saad bin Saud, guesthouses and houses packed along narrow lanes, all within a fortified outline of about 29 hectares.
Did you know? After 1818 the townspeople moved away, mostly to Riyadh, and the ruins stood empty for generations; the writer Robert Lacey compared them to Pompeii.

The cleft follows a joint โ a natural fracture plane in the rock โ along which the stone has parted. Erosion has since cut back the base of each half, leaving them perched like a pair of mushrooms on slender supports. The precise way the split came to be so clean has been the subject of popular debate, but geologically it is a natural joint: the rock parted along a line of weakness already present in the stone.
Did you know? The nearby oasis of Tayma appears several times in the Hebrew Bible, including the books of Job and Jeremiah, as a wealthy trading town.

The Nabataeans, the traders who built Petra some 500 km to the north-west, made Hegra their great southern city in the first century CE, and the tomb dates from that period.

The site, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015, has two parts. Jabal Umm Sinman rises above the oasis town of Jubbah, about 90 km northwest of the city of Ha'il, inside the Nafud sand sea. The hill reaches 1,264 metres above sea level, around 450 metres above the surrounding plain, and once looked out over a freshwater lake that stretched up to 20 km in length and about 5 km in width.
Did you know? The rock art at Jabal al-Manjor alone has been recorded as 190 panels grouped in twelve clusters.
Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
