On the eastern edge of the Namib, where the red dunes of the Namib-Naukluft park run out against gravel plains and isolated mountains, lies one of the darkest night skies on inhabited Earth. The NamibRand Nature Reserve covers more than 200,000 hectares of private land in south-western Namibia, and in May 2012 it became Africa's first International Dark Sky Reserve โ at the Gold tier, the strictest category, and only the second place anywhere to receive it. Lighting across the reserve follows dark-sky rules, and the reserve keeps a sky-quality meter running at its Keerweder headquarters, logging the darkness every few minutes from dusk to dawn.
Did you know? Its 2012 dark-sky certification was the first not only in Africa but in any developing country.
Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
