Bingham Canyon Mine
The Bingham Canyon Mine, known to locals as the Kennecott copper mine, is the largest human-made excavation on Earth and the deepest open-pit mine in the world. 2 km deep and about 4 km across, a vast terraced amphitheatre of stepped benches. It is visible to the naked eye from orbit, and it is thought to have produced more copper than any other mine in history. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1966.
