The Most Beautiful Beaches in Asia

5 places in 4 countries ยท updated 14 October 2026

In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful beaches in Asia are Maya Bay (Thailand), Miho no Matsubara (Japan) and Butterfly Valley, Fethiye (Turkey). The list covers 5 beaches in 4 countries. Thailand has the most, with 2. Last updated 14 October 2026.

Asia's most memorable beaches owe their drama to the rock around them. In the Andaman Sea, tropical rain has dissolved old limestone into sheer karst cliffs and islands that enclose coves of white sand. Along the Turkish coast, canyons open directly onto the sea, and in Japan a shoreline can be beautiful for its pines and its view of a sacred mountain as much as for its sand.

Maya Bay on Ko Phi Phi Leh in Thailand is a cove almost closed by limestone walls, the setting of the film The Beach. Railay, on a peninsula near Krabi cut off from the mainland by cliffs, is framed by karst towers popular with climbers. Miho no Matsubara in Shizuoka is a shore of pines facing Mount Fuji across Suruga Bay, part of the Fujisan World Heritage site and the setting of the legend of the celestial feather robe. Butterfly Valley near Fethiye is a beach at the mouth of a steep gorge with a waterfall at its head, named for the Jersey tiger moths that gather there. Kelingking on Nusa Penida in Indonesia lies beneath a headland whose silhouette resembles a dinosaur.

The limestone walls give the bay its drama. They rise straight from the water with overhangs and notches cut by the sea, and they change colour with the light as the day moves on. At night the shallows can shimmer with bioluminescent plankton. Because the bay is so shallow and full of coral, boats cannot come in directly at low tide; they anchor in the deeper Loh Samah bay on the far side, and visitors cross to the beach through a short passage of rock and jungle.

Did you know? The bay formed thousands of years ago when part of a ring of limestone cliffs collapsed, opening a gap to the sea.

The grove covers the shore of the Miho peninsula, in the Shimizu ward of Shizuoka. Tens of thousands of pines grow along it. From the shore the view also takes in the Izu peninsula across the bay. The Japanese government designated the grove a Place of Scenic Beauty in 1922, and in 1916 it was chosen as one of the New Three Views of Japan. Its sand was once white, but has grown darker, probably because less sediment now reaches the coast from the Abe River.

Did you know? When it became a Place of Scenic Beauty in 1922 the grove held about 93,000 pines; by 2014 only around 30,700 were counted.

The valley owes its name to its insects. Researchers have recorded 105 species of butterfly from 15 families here, but the emblem is the Jersey tiger, a moth in the local subspecies Euplagia quadripunctaria rhodosensis. The flora is equally rich: 147 plant species from 54 families. A path from the beach leads inland to two small waterfalls about 60 metres high that run all year round.

Did you know? The Jersey tiger is the only moth or butterfly designated a priority species under Annex II of the EU Habitats Directive of 1992.

The peninsula is really four shores in one. West Railay is the classic crescent of pale sand facing the Andaman Sea, with the karst towers framing the sunset. East Railay, where boats from Krabi come in, is fringed with mangroves and muddy at low tide - a working edge rather than a swimming beach. A walkway from the eastern side leads to Phra Nang, the most theatrical of the four, tucked beneath an overhanging headland, while Ton Sai, over the rocks to the north, has long been the rough-edged base of the climbing crowd. On the trail towards Ton Sai, Diamond Cave has a walkway leading into its interior.

Did you know? Climbers began bolting Railay's cliffs in the late 1980s, when the peninsula was still home mainly to small fishing and coconut-farming communities.

The drama is a matter of scale and colour. The cliffs rise about 180 metres, the vegetation clinging to their ledges is an intense tropical green, and the water shifts from deep blue offshore to milky turquoise over the sand. The best moments are early, before the midday haze flattens the colours, and late afternoon, when the sun drops behind the ridge and the headland throws its shadow across the bay. From the viewpoint the ridge stacks up in successive humps, and on a clear day the swell draws white lines of foam around its foot.

Did you know? Seen from a different angle, the headland is also likened to a young whale rather than a dinosaur.

How this list is ranked

Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ€” the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
