In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful bridges seen on screen in the world are Golden Gate Bridge (United States), Pont Neuf (France) and Charles Bridge (Czech Republic). The list covers 6 bridges seen on screen in 4 countries. France has the most, with 2. Last updated 14 October 2026.
Film needs a bridge for the same reason a city does: it joins two places and frames whatever crosses it. A famous span tells an audience at once where a story is set, and its deck, towers and cables give directors ready-made stages for chases, farewells and climaxes. The bridges that keep returning to the screen are the ones whose silhouette can stand in for an entire city.
San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, opened in 1937 and painted International Orange, has appeared in countless films, from Hitchcock's Vertigo to disaster movies that tear it apart. New York's Brooklyn Bridge, completed in 1883 as the first steel-wire suspension bridge, joins Manhattan and Brooklyn between stone towers pierced by pointed Gothic arches, a profile cinema has used for more than a century.
Europe answers with older stone and lavish ironwork. Prague's Charles Bridge, begun in the 14th century and lined with Baroque statues of saints, gives spy thrillers and period dramas a ready-made Gothic night scene. London's Tower Bridge, a Victorian bascule bridge whose roadway lifts for ships, is screen shorthand for the city in everything from romantic comedies to superhero films, and in Paris the Pont Alexandre III, built for the 1900 Exposition Universelle, adds gilded statues and ornate lamps to any scene along the Seine.

The bridge's color exists because nobody could agree on one. The steel arrived from the fabricators already coated in a burnt-orange sealant primer meant only to protect it from rust during shipping and assembly. The US Navy, worried about ships colliding with it in fog, wanted it painted black with yellow stripes; the Army Air Corps wanted red-and-white candy-cane bands for aircraft visibility.
Did you know? In 2020 new railing slats began making the bridge hum in strong winds; one analysis found the tones match the notes F, G, A and B.

The name means "New Bridge", yet this is the oldest standing bridge across the Seine in Paris. Its first stone went down on 31 May 1578 under Henri III, and after long interruptions during the Wars of Religion the crossing was finished in 1606 and opened the following year under Henri IV. The design is credited to Baptiste Androuet du Cerceau and Guillaume Marchand.

The most-repeated story about Charles Bridge is that its mortar was strengthened with eggs, shipped in from towns and villages across Bohemia on the emperor's order.
Did you know? Until 1870 the bridge was simply called the Stone Bridge or the Prague Bridge; it only took Charles IV's name in the 19th century.

Tower Bridge was the answer to a very Victorian problem: how to join the fast-growing East End to the south bank without cutting off the ships that still unloaded in the Pool of London, between London Bridge and the Tower. A conventional fixed bridge at street level would have blocked their masts.
Did you know? In 1952 a double-decker bus was caught on the bridge as it began to open, and the driver accelerated across the widening gap, earning a ten-pound bonus.

Paris has older bridges and longer ones, but none so openly theatrical. The Pont Alexandre III crosses the Seine in a single low steel arch between the Invalides on the left bank and the Grand Palais and Petit Palais on the right, and it was built as a piece of diplomacy in metal and gilt.
Did you know? The bridge has appeared in films from An American in Paris and Funny Face to Midnight in Paris, and in Adele's Someone Like You video.

The man who designed the Brooklyn Bridge never saw a single cable strung. In June 1869, while surveying the site, John Roebling had his foot crushed against a piling by an approaching ferry. He refused amputation, treated the wound himself with a water cure of his own devising, and died of tetanus three weeks later โ leaving the project to his 32-year-old son, Washington, before construction had properly begun.
Did you know? Its main span of about 486 metres made it the longest suspension bridge in the world when it opened in 1883.
Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
