In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful buildings in Russia are Bolshoi Theatre, Komsomolskaya Metro Station (Circle Line) and Kolomenskoye. The list covers 6 buildings. Last updated 13 October 2026.
Russia's great buildings show how often the country reinvented itself through architecture. Medieval Muscovy developed its own stone forms, such as the tent-roofed church; Peter the Great founded St. Petersburg in the Western image, inviting European architects to build fortresses, palaces and cathedrals; and the Soviet Union answered with metro palaces and towers meant to show off a new kind of state. Each era built on the ambitions of the one before.
The Church of the Ascension at Kolomenskoye, completed in 1532 on a former royal estate above the Moskva River, was one of the first churches in Russia built in stone with a tent roof. The Peter and Paul Fortress, founded in 1703, marks the birth of St. Petersburg, and its cathedral, with a slender gilded spire, holds the tombs of the Russian emperors. The Hermitage Museum, founded by Catherine the Great in 1764, now fills the Winter Palace and its neighbours with one of the largest art collections in the world.
Moscow supplies the rest. The Bolshoi Theatre, rebuilt in the nineteenth century after a fire, fronts Theatre Square with a portico crowned by Apollo's chariot. Beneath the city, Komsomolskaya station on the Circle Line, opened in 1952, has a yellow Baroque vault set with mosaics, more ballroom than platform. The Main Building of Moscow State University, completed in 1953 and the largest of the Seven Sisters, was the tallest building in Europe until 1990.

The company dates its birth to 1776, when Catherine II licensed Prince Pyotr Urusov to stage theatrical performances in Moscow; the English entrepreneur Michael Maddox became his partner. Fire shadowed its early decades: the Petrovka theatre burned in 1805, and its successor on the Arbat was lost in the blaze of 1812 during the French occupation.

The estate's most important building has nothing to do with that legend โ it's the Church of the Ascension, raised in 1532 on the orders of Grand Prince Vasily III to celebrate the birth of his son, who would grow up to become Ivan the Terrible.
Did you know? Peter the Great's small 18th-century log house, brought from the banks of the Northern Dvina, now stands in the park.

The commission first went in 1947 to Boris Iofan, but his design placed the tower on the very edge of the Sparrow Hills escarpment, where the ground was prone to landslides, and the job was handed to Lev Rudnev. Rudnev, already known for the Frunze Military Academy, moved the building about 800 m back from the cliff; the engineering team was led by Vsevolod Nasonov.
Did you know? Thousands of prisoners took part in the construction, and accounts describe a separate camp section for about 700 inmates on the 22nd floor.

Instead it became the state's most feared jail. From the early eighteenth century until the early 1920s the Trubetskoy Bastion held political prisoners, and during the revolutions of 1917 the fortress changed sides several times. In October 1917 its guns fired on the Winter Palace, and in January 1919 four grand dukes of the Romanov family were shot inside its walls.
Did you know? The angel on top of the cathedral spire, which also serves as a weathervane, is about 3.2 metres tall.

Today the core of the museum is a chain of buildings along Palace Embankment. The Winter Palace, the Romanovs' official residence, was built largely to designs by Bartolomeo Rastrelli in Elizabethan Baroque, its green-and-white main faรงade running about 215 metres; much of its interior was remade after a fire in 1837.
Did you know? Leonardo's Madonna Litta entered the collection in 1865, while his Benois Madonna arrived only in 1914, bought from the Benois family.
Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
