The Most Beautiful Medieval Places in Austria

5 places ยท updated 6 October 2026

In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful medieval places in Austria are St. Stephen's Cathedral, Melk Abbey and Hohensalzburg Fortress. The list covers 5 medieval places. Last updated 6 October 2026.

Austria's medieval places stand on the Danube and the Alpine passes that made the region a crossroads of trade and faith. Benedictine houses and archbishops grew wealthy enough to build on rocky outcrops, and many medieval foundations were later dressed in Baroque splendour without losing their Gothic or Romanesque bones.

St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna has a Gothic south tower about 136 metres high and a roof laid with tens of thousands of glazed tiles in a zigzag pattern. Melk Abbey, home to Benedictine monks since 1089, was rebuilt in the 18th century as a golden-yellow Baroque mass above the Wachau valley. Hohensalzburg Fortress, begun in 1077, is one of the largest fully preserved medieval castles in Europe. Hochosterwitz Castle in Carinthia crowns a steep limestone rock, and the path to its gates passes through more than a dozen fortified gates. Admont Abbey, founded in 1074, holds the largest monastic library hall in the world, finished in 1776.

St. Stephen's Cathedral is the centre of Vienna in every sense: the U-Bahn's central interchange lies beneath its square, and its south tower, known to the Viennese as the Steffl, dominates the old-town skyline at 136 metres.

Did you know? The original Pummerin, cast in 1705, was made partly from nearly 300 cannons captured from the Ottoman besiegers of 1683.

Seen from the Danube, Melk Abbey looks less like a monastery than a palace laid along a rock above the river, with twin towers and a great dome at its western end. Benedictine monks from Lambach moved into a castle here in 1089, given to them by Margrave Leopold II, and the site was already the burial place of the Babenbergs, Austria's first ruling dynasty, and of Saint Coloman.

Did you know? A fire in 1297 destroyed much of the medieval abbey, but the monks managed to save most of the manuscripts.

Hohensalzburg Fortress covers the whole top of the Festungsberg, 506 metres above sea level, and at about 250 by 150 metres it is one of the largest medieval castles in Europe. It was begun in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard of Salzburg, who had sided with Pope Gregory VII against Emperor Henry IV in the Investiture Controversy and needed a refuge.

Did you know? The fortress's only siege, in 1525, lasted from 5 July to 31 August, and the rebel peasants and miners never broke in.

Hochosterwitz stands on an isolated dolomite rock that rises about 170 metres above the Zollfeld plain in Carinthia, about 7 km east of St. Veit an der Glan; on a clear day it can be seen from some 30 km away. The rock was settled in the Bronze Age, and it enters written history in 860 as Astarwiza, in a deed of the East Frankish king Louis the German granting estates in the region to the Archbishopric of Salzburg.

Did you know? The first gate, finished in 1580, shows two larger-than-life flag-bearers waving Khevenhรผller black and gold and the red and white of Carinthia.

Admont Abbey, in the Enns valley of Styria at the gateway to the Gesรคuse mountains, is the oldest surviving monastery in the province, founded in 1074 by Archbishop Gebhard of Salzburg, and a Benedictine community still lives here. But it is known across the world for one room: its library hall, the largest monastic library in the world, which earlier admirers did not hesitate to call the eighth wonder of the world.

Did you know? The manuscript collection includes the fifteenth-century Admont Bartholomew, an important source for the history of medicine.

How this list is ranked

Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ€” the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
