The Most Beautiful Natural Wonders in Nouvelle-Aquitaine

5 places · updated 14 October 2026

In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful natural wonders in Nouvelle-Aquitaine are Dune of Pilat, Pic du Midi d'Ossau and Lascaux Cave. The list covers 5 natural wonders. Last updated 14 October 2026.

Nouvelle-Aquitaine stretches from the long Atlantic coast to the crest of the Pyrenees, and its natural wonders follow that span. Ocean winds have heaped sand into dunes along the Landes and the Arcachon Bay, while inland the limestone plateaus of the Périgord are cut by rivers and riddled with caves. In the Vézère valley those caves sheltered some of the most celebrated art of the Ice Age, which is why rock, water and human history are hard to separate here.

The Dune of Pilat, at the mouth of the Arcachon Bay, is the tallest sand dune in Europe, a wall of sand between pine forest and ocean that shifts inland year by year. Far to the south, the Pic du Midi d'Ossau rises above the Ossau valley in the Béarn with an unmistakable split summit, the remnant of a volcano far older than the Pyrenees themselves.

The caves of the Vézère valley bring the other half of the region's story. Lascaux, found by teenagers in 1940, holds the Hall of the Bulls with its great painted aurochs, horses and deer. At Font-de-Gaume, near Les Eyzies, bison are painted in several colours, and the narrow corridors of Les Combarelles are lined with hundreds of fine engravings of horses, mammoths and other animals.

That migration is documented, not folklore. Maps from 1708 to 1786 show the dune sitting further south, and even further offshore, than where it stands today. Over centuries of that same slow crawl, it has swallowed marshes, buried forests, and covered at least one village on its way inland — the pine forest now growing on its landward flank is essentially next in line.

Did you know? On 31 December 2013 a visitor found an Iron Age funerary urn and a small vase, about 800 BC, exposed in the sand.

Its shape is owed to fire. The mountain is the eroded heart of a volcano active in the Permian period, around 278 million years ago, whose caldera collapsed and was later lifted and buckled when the Pyrenees were raised. What remains is a ring of hard volcanic rock that the ice and weather have left standing while softer ground around it wore away — which is why the peak rises so abruptly from its pastures and why its walls are so sheer.

Did you know? The earliest known attempt on the summit was made by the nobleman François de Foix-Candale, probably in 1552, though whether he reached the top is disputed.

2 metres long, the largest animal figure known in cave art. Beyond it, the narrow Axial Diverticulum carries cows and horses painted across its walls and ceiling. Deeper in, the Apse is covered with more than a thousand engravings, and at the bottom of a shaft lies the most enigmatic image of all: a stick-like man with a bird's head, the only human figure in the cave.

Did you know? In the Hall of the Bulls stands a puzzling creature with two straight lines on its forehead, nicknamed the unicorn.

What you see, lit at close range as you move along the corridor, is a crowded bestiary. Horses dominate, alone and in groups, but there are reindeer, ibex, mammoths, woolly rhinoceros, bears, big cats and a few bovids, often overlapping so that one animal's back becomes another's leg. The reindeer are the ones people remember: drawn with an observer's accuracy, some of them lower their heads as if to drink.

The cave mouth was known to local people long before anyone noticed what lay inside. On 12 September 1901 the village schoolmaster Denis Peyrony, who days earlier had seen the engravings of nearby Les Combarelles with the prehistorian Henri Breuil, recognised the paintings for what they were.

Did you know? It forms part of the Vézère Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed in 1979.

How this list is ranked

Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented — the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.

Questions people ask

What are the most beautiful natural wonders in Nouvelle-Aquitaine?
On our list, Dune of Pilat ranks first, followed by Pic du Midi d'Ossau and Lascaux Cave.
How tall is the Dune of Pilat?
It rises to roughly 100 to 110 metres, the exact height changing as wind and sea reshape it. It is the highest sand dune in Europe and moves slowly inland, burying the edge of the pine forest.
Why was Lascaux Cave closed to the public?
Large numbers of visitors after it opened in 1948 brought carbon dioxide, humidity and microorganisms that began to damage the paintings, so it was closed in 1963. Faithful replicas were built nearby instead.
Is the Pic du Midi d'Ossau a volcano?
It is the eroded core of an ancient volcano that was active around 280 million years ago, long before the Pyrenees were raised. Its twin-peaked silhouette has made it a symbol of the Béarn.
