The Most Beautiful Natural Wonders in South Africa

6 places ยท updated 13 October 2026

In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful natural wonders in South Africa are Cape of Good Hope, Table Mountain and Blyde River Canyon. The list covers 6 natural wonders. Last updated 13 October 2026.

South Africa's natural wonders owe much to its ancient rocks. Hard sandstones and quartzites of the Cape Fold Belt form flat-topped mountains and long ridges, the Great Escarpment drops from the interior plateau in walls of basalt and sandstone, and two oceans meet along a coast of cliffs and headlands. Around the Cape, this landscape also holds the Cape Floral Region, one of the richest plant kingdoms on Earth.

Table Mountain rises above Cape Town with a summit almost perfectly level for about three kilometres, often draped in the cloud known as the tablecloth. To the south the Cape of Good Hope, rounded by Bartolomeu Dias in 1488, ends the Cape Peninsula in rocky cliffs. In the Drakensberg the Amphitheatre is a curved wall of basalt several kilometres long, over which the Tugela Falls plunge in a series of drops.

The country's other wonders are just as distinct. Blyde River Canyon in Mpumalanga cuts deep into the escarpment, with the rounded peaks of the Three Rondavels standing above its river. On the Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape, Hole-in-the-Wall is a detached cliff pierced by an arch through which the waves break. Near Oudtshoorn, the Cango Caves run through the limestone of the Swartberg foothills in a series of halls hung with dripstone formations.

The first European known to reach it was the Portuguese navigator Bartolomeu Dias in 1488. He named it the Cape of Storms; King John II of Portugal is said to have renamed it the Cape of Good Hope for the promise it held of a sea route to India, a promise Vasco da Gama fulfilled a decade later. In 1652 the Dutch East India Company set up a supply station on Table Bay, about 50 km to the north, which grew into Cape Town.

Did you know? Because the water temperatures differ so much, sea life west of Cape Point is noticeably different from that found to the east.

The flat top is a geological inversion: the mountain is a syncline, the floor of an ancient fold, protected by a very hard layer of quartzitic Table Mountain Sandstone over 450 million years old, while the softer rock around it wore away. What grows on it is extraordinary.

Did you know? British forces built three blockhouses on the slopes in 1796; the King's Blockhouse still stands in good condition while the other two are ruins.

The name goes back to 1844, when a party of Voortrekkers led by Hendrik Potgieter returned safely to this river; "blyde" is old Dutch for glad or happy, and in 2005 the river itself was renamed the Motlatse. It meets the Treur River at Bourke's Luck Potholes, where swirling water charged with pebbles has drilled deep cylindrical basins into the bedrock; footbridges cross directly above them.

Did you know? The cliffs at God's Window appear in the 1980 cult comedy The Gods Must Be Crazy.

People used the caves long before they were mapped: paintings and stone artefacts show that the entrance was occupied during the Middle and Later Stone Ages, though much of the rock art near the entrance has since been damaged. In modern times the cave was explored in 1780 by a local farmer, Jacobus van Zyl, who was lowered into the first great chamber. That hall, roughly as long as a football field, still carries his name.

Did you know? The 1975 breakthrough into Cango III took place during a symposium on cave biology, when explorers pumped most of the water out of a flooded chamber.

The isiXhosa name, esiKhaleni, is usually translated as "the place of sound" or "place of thunder". In heavy swell the waves surge through the arch and boom against the rock, and the noise carries a long way along the shore.

Did you know? The Oceanos rolled over and sank bow first about 45 minutes after the last person was lifted off, and its final minutes were filmed.

Over the edge of the Amphitheatre pours the Tugela Falls, which drops in five tiers from the plateau of Mont-aux-Sources, where the Tugela River is born. Its height was long given as 948 metres; a Czech survey in 2016 measured 983 metres, which would make its total drop greater than Angel Falls in Venezuela, though the ranking is still debated, since Angel Falls has the longer single uninterrupted plunge.

Did you know? For the film Zulu, a replica of the Rorke's Drift mission was built beside the Tugela River, about 160 km from the real battlefield.

How this list is ranked

Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ€” the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.

Questions people ask

What are the most beautiful natural wonders in South Africa?
On our list, Cape of Good Hope ranks first, followed by Table Mountain and Blyde River Canyon.
Is the Cape of Good Hope the southern tip of Africa?
No. The southernmost point of Africa is Cape Agulhas, about 150 kilometres to the southeast, where the Atlantic and Indian oceans are conventionally said to meet.
Why is Table Mountain flat on top?
Its summit is capped by nearly horizontal layers of hard quartzitic sandstone that resist erosion far better than the softer rocks beneath, so the mountain has worn down evenly into a flat plateau.
What is the tablecloth on Table Mountain?
It is an orographic cloud that forms when the southeasterly wind pushes moist air up the mountain. The air cools and condenses as it rises, and the cloud pours over the edge of the summit before dissolving in the warmer air below.
