The Most Beautiful Places in Argyll and Bute

6 places · updated 14 October 2026

In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful places in Argyll and Bute are Fingal's Cave, Buachaille Etive Mòr and Iona Abbey. The list covers 6 places. Last updated 14 October 2026.

Argyll and Bute is the western seaboard of Scotland, a country of sea lochs, peninsulas and islands where the Highlands break up into the Atlantic. Long inlets reach deep inland between mountains, and the Inner Hebrides lie scattered offshore. This was the heart of the early Gaelic kingdom of Dál Riata and later of clan Campbell, and its lochs are still watched over by tower houses built by rival families.

The island of Staffa holds Fingal's Cave, a sea cave cut into hexagonal basalt columns, its echoing waves the inspiration for Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture after his visit in 1829. On the mainland, Buachaille Etive Mòr stands as a near-perfect rock pyramid at the edge of Rannoch Moor, guarding the approach to Glen Coe and Glen Etive.

The castles are among the most photographed in Scotland. Castle Stalker sits on a tiny tidal islet in Loch Laich, a four-storey tower house against a backdrop of hills, and appeared at the end of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Kilchurn Castle, built in the fifteenth century by the Campbells of Glenorchy, stands in ruins on a low peninsula at the head of Loch Awe. Above the harbour town of Oban, McCaig's Tower is a ring of granite arches modelled on the Colosseum, commissioned at the end of the nineteenth century by a local banker and never completed.

The columns inside this cave on the uninhabited island of Staffa were poured, geologically speaking, at the same moment as the more famous ones across the water in Ireland.

Did you know? In 1772 a single family lived on Staffa, growing barley, oats and potatoes; the island has been uninhabited since 1800.

Buachaille Etive Mòr stands at the point where the road across Rannoch Moor drops into Glen Coe, and its front peak, Stob Dearg, rises from the flat bog in a single steep pyramid of rock.

Did you know? The Abraham brothers, pioneers of climbing photography, also photographed their 1900 ascent of Crowberry Ridge, a classic rock climb graded Severe.

Castle Stalker is a four-storey tower house standing on a small tidal islet in Loch Laich, an inlet of Loch Linnhe on the coast of Argyll. It owes its fame almost entirely to its setting: a single grey keep rising from a rock just big enough to hold it, reflected in still water,.

Did you know? In Monty Python and the Holy Grail the castle plays the 'Castle Aaaaarrrrrrggghhh', where the film's quest comes to its abrupt end.

Above the harbour of Oban, on Battery Hill, stands something that looks at first like a Roman amphitheatre dropped onto a Scottish hilltop.

Did you know? There are 94 lancet arches in all, and McCaig intended each opening to hold a statue.

On a low spit of land at the head of Loch Awe, the broken tower and walls of Kilchurn stand almost at water level, so that on a still day the whole ruin is doubled in the loch.

Did you know? In the later 16th century the tower gained its round corner turrets carried on corbels.

How this list is ranked

Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented — the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
