In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful places in Beijing are National Centre for the Performing Arts, Beijing, Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven. The list covers 6 places. Last updated 14 October 2026.
Beijing has been the capital of China for most of the last seven centuries, and the Ming and Qing emperors designed it as a cosmic diagram. The imperial palace sits on a north-south axis at the centre, altars to heaven and earth surround it at the cardinal points, and gardens and lakes were laid out for the court. The city keeps that ceremonial core while adding some of the boldest contemporary buildings in Asia.
The Forbidden City, the palace of twenty-four emperors, is the largest surviving ensemble of traditional wooden buildings in the world, its yellow-tiled halls rising behind courtyard after courtyard. To the south, the Temple of Heaven holds the round Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests under three tiers of blue roof tiles, where emperors prayed for good harvests. In the northwest, the Summer Palace arranges pavilions, bridges and a long painted corridor around Kunming Lake and Longevity Hill.
Modern Beijing answers with its own landmarks. The National Centre for the Performing Arts, a dome of titanium and glass designed by Paul Andreu, appears to float on a surrounding pool. The CCTV Headquarters by Rem Koolhaas and Ole Scheeren bends into a continuous loop of two leaning towers joined at the top, one of the most recognisable structures of the twenty-first century.

Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
