5 places ยท updated 13 October 2026

In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful places in Friuli-Venezia Giulia are Miramare Castle, Palmanova Fortress and Grotta Gigante. The list covers 5 places. Last updated 13 October 2026.

Friuli-Venezia Giulia sits at the corner where the Latin, Slavic and Germanic worlds meet, and almost every power that crossed that corner left a mark: Rome, the Lombards, the patriarchs of Aquileia, Venice and Habsburg Austria. Its landscape is just as layered, running from Alpine peaks through the Friulian plain to lagoons and the limestone plateau above Trieste, the Carso, which gave the word karst to geology. Few Italian regions pack so many borders into one place.

Aquileia, once one of the great cities of the Roman Empire, keeps in its basilica a vast fourth-century mosaic floor of fish, shepherds and Christian symbols, among the largest early Christian mosaics anywhere. In Cividale del Friuli, the Oratorio di Santa Maria in Valle, known as the Tempietto Longobardo, preserves eighth-century Lombard stucco figures of rare quality. Palmanova, founded by Venice in 1593, is a fortress town laid out as a perfect nine-pointed star, its streets radiating from a hexagonal central square.

On the sea near Trieste, Miramare Castle is a white nineteenth-century residence built for Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Austria, later Emperor of Mexico, rising straight from the rocks of a promontory amid its park. Beneath the Carso, the Grotta Gigante opens into an enormous single chamber, so tall that scientific instruments have long been suspended inside it. Roman, Lombard, Venetian and Habsburg pasts sit within an hour of each other.

How this list is ranked

Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ€” the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
