In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful places in Jordan are Petra, Wadi Rum and Kerak Castle. The list covers 6 places. Last updated 13 October 2026.
Jordan lies along the eastern edge of the Great Rift Valley, where the land drops to the Dead Sea and rises again in plateaus of red and yellow sandstone. That stone is soft enough to carve and hard enough to last, and it sits on the old caravan routes between Arabia, Egypt and Syria. Nabataean merchants, Roman city-builders, Umayyad princes and Crusader knights all left their mark here, and the desert climate has kept much of it remarkably intact.
Petra is the masterpiece: the Nabataean capital, reached through the narrow Siq, with tomb facades such as the Treasury and the Monastery cut straight into rose-coloured cliffs. To the south, Wadi Rum is a desert of red sand and sheer sandstone and granite massifs, a landscape filmmakers have used to stand in for other planets. Wadi Mujib is a gorge that cuts through the escarpment to the Dead Sea shore, in a reserve lying far below sea level.
The historic sites span many centuries. Gerasa, modern Jerash, keeps one of the best-preserved Roman provincial cities anywhere, with its oval plaza and colonnaded main street. Qusayr 'Amra is a small Umayyad bathhouse of the early eighth century whose walls and domes are covered in frescoes of hunting, bathing and the night sky. Kerak Castle, built by the Crusaders in the twelfth century and later strengthened by Muslim rulers, sits on a ridge above the old King's Highway, its vaulted halls running deep into the rock.

For centuries Petra existed mainly in local Bedouin knowledge and old texts, unseen by European travelers, until the Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt talked his way in in 1812 by posing as a Muslim pilgrim โ the disguise mattered because outsiders weren't otherwise let anywhere near the site.
Did you know? Rome annexed the Nabataean kingdom in AD 106, and Hadrian visited in 130, giving the city the title Hadriane Petra Metropolis.

Wadi Rum is a desert valley in the far south of Jordan, east of Aqaba near the Saudi border, where sheer mountains of sandstone and granite rise out of flat floors of red and apricot sand. Covering about 720 square kilometres, it is the largest wadi in the country.
Did you know? From the summit of Jabal Umm ad Dami, Jordan's highest peak at about 1,850 metres, the Red Sea can be seen on a clear day.

Kerak Castle sits on the tip of a high plateau east of the Dead Sea, its long walls running along a ridge that drops away steeply on three sides. It is one of the largest castles of the Levant, and from its ramparts the view opens across the hills of ancient Moab towards the Jordan valley.
Did you know? During his 1184 siege Saladin tried to fill the rock-cut ditches so his siege engines could reach the walls, but he withdrew after about four weeks.

Wadi Mujib cuts through the eastern wall of the Dead Sea rift. The river gathers seven tributaries from the plateau of central Jordan and, in its last stretch, forces its way through a narrow canyon before spilling into the Dead Sea at around 420 metres below sea level.
Did you know? Although the canyon outlet is narrow, the river drains a catchment of about 6,570 square kilometres of the Jordanian plateau.

From the road across the eastern Jordanian desert, Qusayr สฟAmra looks like almost nothing โ a small, low building of limestone and basalt with a triple-vaulted hall and a small bath wing. Inside, it holds the most important surviving cycle of early Islamic painting.
Did you know? Because the Visigothic king Roderic reigned only in 710โ712, scholars long dated the paintings to around 710 and credited Caliph al-Walid I.

Few cities of the Roman East survive as legibly as Gerasa.
Did you know? The Temple of Artemis survived the earthquake of 749 that brought down much of the city; a later quake in the 12th or 13th century toppled its upper walls.
Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
