The Most Beautiful Places in Kamchatka Krai

5 places ยท updated 13 October 2026

In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful places in Kamchatka Krai are Klyuchevskaya Sopka, Valley of Geysers and Mutnovsky. The list covers 5 places. Last updated 13 October 2026.

Kamchatka is a peninsula of fire and ice on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where the Pacific plate dives beneath the land and feeds one of the densest chains of active volcanoes on Earth. Remote, roadless over most of its length and covered in tundra, birch and snowfields, it combines volcanic cones, geothermal valleys and salmon rivers watched by brown bears; its volcanoes are protected as a World Heritage site.

Klyuchevskaya Sopka is the highest of them, a near-perfect cone that erupts frequently and rises well above the surrounding range. Kronotsky Volcano matches it for symmetry above the lake of the same name, and Mutnovsky in the south hides a crater full of steaming fumaroles, boiling mud and glacier ice side by side.

The Valley of Geysers, found in 1941 by the geologist Tatyana Ustinova, is one of the largest geyser fields in the world, a steep river gorge where dozens of geysers and hot springs vent among bright mineral crusts; a huge landslide in 2007 reshaped part of it. Kurile Lake, filling a caldera ringed by volcanoes in the far south, is one of the largest spawning grounds of sockeye salmon in Eurasia, and the fish draw large numbers of brown bears to its shores every summer.

Klyuchevskaya Sopka is the tallest active volcano in Eurasia and the highest mountain in Siberia: a near-perfect cone that rises to about 4,750 metres from the broad valley of the Kamchatka River, so much higher than anything around it that its prominence ranks among the greatest on earth.

Did you know? A 2007 ash plume about 10 km high disrupted air routes between North America and Asia and dusted Unimak Island in Alaska with ash.

The Valley of Geysers in Kamchatka is a six-kilometre gorge on the Geysernaya River where some ninety geysers and many hot springs break out of the slopes, making it the second-largest geyser field in the world.

Did you know? On a return trip in July 1941 Ustinova and Krupenin timed and named the vents, choosing names like the Crack and the Triple for the shape of their jets.

Mutnovsky is a volcano you can walk into. In the south of the Kamchatka Peninsula, a massif built of four merged cones holds craters about two kilometres across and hundreds of metres deep, filled with glacier ice on one side and roaring fumaroles on the other.

Did you know? Its two main craters are each about two kilometres across and up to 400 metres deep, and the southwestern one is filled by a glacier.

Kurile Lake fills a volcanic caldera in the far south of Kamchatka, and it looks exactly like what it is: a deep blue basin ringed by volcanoes, with Ilyinsky volcano, whose lava flows reach into the water, the jagged ridge of Diky Greben on the shore and green islands scattered across the surface.

Did you know? The eruption is estimated to have released 26โ€“29 million tonnes of sulfur and 43โ€“49 million tonnes of chlorine, comparable to Tambora in 1815.

Kronotsky is the volcano people draw when they draw a volcano: an almost perfectly symmetrical cone rising to about 3,500 metres on the Pacific side of Kamchatka, often compared with Fuji and Mayon.

Did you know? The deep ravines that flute the cone begin at around 2,500 metres and run down toward its base.

How this list is ranked

Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ€” the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.

Questions people ask

What are the most beautiful places in Kamchatka Krai?
On our list, Klyuchevskaya Sopka ranks first, followed by Valley of Geysers and Mutnovsky.
Why does Kamchatka have so many volcanoes?
Kamchatka lies above a subduction zone where the Pacific plate sinks beneath the edge of the continent. Melting at depth feeds a long chain of volcanoes, around thirty of which are considered active.
Who discovered the Valley of Geysers?
The Valley of Geysers was found in 1941 by the geologist Tatyana Ustinova and her guide Anisifor Krupenin. It lies inside the Kronotsky Nature Reserve.
Why are there so many bears at Kurile Lake?
