The Most Beautiful Places in Kent

5 places ยท updated 13 October 2026

In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful places in Kent are White Cliffs of Dover, Canterbury Cathedral and Leeds Castle. The list covers 5 places. Last updated 13 October 2026.

Kent is the corner of England nearest the Continent, where the chalk of the North Downs reaches the sea in white cliffs facing France across the narrowest part of the Channel. That position made it the gateway for missionaries, pilgrims and invaders alike, and its orchards, hop gardens and great country estates earned it the name of the Garden of England.

The White Cliffs of Dover are the county's emblem, a wall of chalk that has greeted travellers crossing from France for centuries. Inland, Canterbury Cathedral is the mother church of the Church of England, where Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered in 1170 and to which Chaucer sent his pilgrims. Leeds Castle rises from two islands in a lake, a medieval stronghold that became a royal residence and later a country house.

Kent's gardens and curiosities have a quieter appeal. At Sissinghurst Castle Garden, Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson laid out a series of garden rooms around the remains of an Elizabethan house, among them the famous White Garden. In Margate, the Shell Grotto is an underground passage and chamber covered in millions of shells set in mosaics, and nobody knows for certain who made it or when.

The White Cliffs of Dover stand on both sides of the port of Dover for about 13 km, a wall of chalk up to 110 metres high facing the narrowest part of the Channel. On a clear day France is visible 32 km away, and from France the cliffs are visible in turn.

Did you know? Ravens returned to nest on the cliffs in 2009, after an absence of about 120 years.

Did you know? Becket's body stayed in the crypt for half a century after his murder and was moved to the new shrine in the Trinity Chapel only in 1220.

Leeds Castle seems to float. Its pale stone ranges stand on islands in a lake formed by the River Len, and the water reflects them almost the whole way round. The lake was probably created under Edward I, who made the castle one of his favourite homes.

Did you know? A Royalist cousin, John Colepeper, was granted more than five million acres of Virginia for helping the future Charles II escape, the root of the castle's later fortune.

A slender Elizabethan tower of rose-red brick rises from the Weald of Kent, and around it lies a sequence of walled and hedged enclosures, each planted as a separate room.

Did you know? For all its fame, the garden covers only about five acres within an estate of roughly 450 acres of farmland and woods.

6 million of them, set into some 2,000 square feet of mosaic of stars, flowers, spirals and symbols no one has convincingly explained. Nobody knows who made the Shell Grotto, or when, or why.

Did you know? Gas lighting was replaced with electricity in 1932, after a change of ownership.

How this list is ranked

Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ€” the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
