The Most Beautiful Places in Pennsylvania

5 places ยท updated 13 October 2026

In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful places in Pennsylvania are Cathedral of Learning, Kinzua Bridge and Fallingwater. The list covers 5 places. Last updated 13 October 2026.

Pennsylvania's beauty is bound up with its industrial history. The long folded ridges of the Appalachians cross the state, rivers cut through them, and beneath them lay the coal and iron that made Pittsburgh the steel capital of America. The fortunes made from steel, glass and chemicals then paid for skyscrapers, gardens and private houses of real ambition, while old industrial structures were left behind as monuments of their own.

In Pittsburgh, the Cathedral of Learning at the University of Pittsburgh is a Gothic Revival tower of 42 storeys, with a vaulted hall at its base and classrooms decorated in the styles of the city's immigrant nations. Upriver at Rankin, Carrie Furnaces 6 and 7, part of the former Homestead Steel Works, are rare surviving pre-war blast furnaces, standing rust-red over the Monongahela.

Fallingwater, which Frank Lloyd Wright designed in the 1930s for the Kaufmann family, cantilevers its concrete terraces directly over a waterfall on Bear Run in the Laurel Highlands. In the northern forests, the Kinzua Bridge was once among the tallest railroad viaducts in the world; after a tornado brought down much of it in 2003, the remaining section became a walkway ending in a glass-floored overlook above the wreckage. In the southeast, Longwood Gardens, created by Pierre S. du Pont, combines formal fountains, meadows and great glass conservatories.

A line of steel towers marches out across the wooded Kinzua Creek valley in northern Pennsylvania and then stops in mid-air; below it, the rest of the structure lies twisted on the valley floor where a tornado threw it in 2003.

Did you know? Trains were limited to 5 miles per hour on the bridge, because locomotives and sometimes the wind made the whole structure vibrate.

Carrie Furnaces 6 and 7 are two blast furnaces standing on the bank of the Monongahela River just upstream from Pittsburgh, and they are among the very few pre-Second World War iron-making furnaces left in the United States.

Did you know? The works drew immigrants from Europe and Black workers from the American South, and safety signs had to be posted in several languages.

How this list is ranked

Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ€” the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
