The Most Beautiful Places in Queensland

6 places ยท updated 14 October 2026

In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful places in Queensland are Great Barrier Reef, K'gari and Lamington National Park. The list covers 6 places. Last updated 14 October 2026.

Along the Queensland coast two World Heritage natural sites run side by side: the Great Barrier Reef offshore and the Wet Tropics rainforest on the land. Warm seas, a tropical climate and an ancient continent that has drifted slowly north have produced coral, sand and forest on a scale found nowhere else, and the sand islands of the south add a landscape that seems to defy its own material.

The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef system in the world, a chain of thousands of reefs and islands stretching for more than two thousand kilometres along the coast. In the north, Daintree National Park protects one of the oldest tropical rainforests on earth, whose plant lineages go back to the forests of Gondwana, and at Cape Tribulation the forest comes down to meet the reef.

Further south, K'gari, formerly known as Fraser Island, is the largest sand island in the world, yet it carries tall rainforest growing on sand. Among its freshwater lakes, Lake McKenzie is a perched lake fed only by rain, its clear water lying over white silica sand. In the Whitsundays, Whitehaven Beach stretches along Whitsunday Island in sand so pure and fine that it barely warms in the sun, and at Hill Inlet the tide swirls it into shifting patterns of white and turquoise.

At around 344,400 square kilometers and roughly 2,300 km long, the Great Barrier Reef isn't one reef so much as some 3,000 individual reefs and hundreds of islands strung together โ€” a footprint about the size of Italy or Japan, and by most measures the largest living structure ever built by living organisms, coralโ€ฆ

Did you know? In places the reef lies up to 160 kilometres from the mainland, across a channel more than 60 metres deep.

K'gari, known for a century and a half as Fraser Island, is the largest sand island in the world: some 123 km of dunes, forest and lakes off the coast of Queensland, built up over roughly 750,000 years from sand carried north by coastal currents onto a volcanic bedrock base.

Lamington spreads across the high plateau of the McPherson Range on the border between Queensland and New South Wales, its rim standing around 900 metres above sea level only a short distance inland from the Pacific surf of the Gold Coast.

Did you know? In 1937 Bernard O'Reilly found two survivors of the crashed airliner City of Brisbane after they had spent ten days in the forest.

Whitehaven Beach runs for some seven kilometres along the eastern shore of Whitsunday Island, the largest of the Whitsunday group off the Queensland coast, inside Whitsunday Islands National Park.

Did you know? The Ngaro people lived on these islands for around 8,000 years, and in 1861 they besieged a European logging camp on Whitsunday Island for two weeks.

Lake McKenzie, known to the Butchulla people as Boorangoora, sits on a sand island and yet holds no seawater, no groundwater and no river water at all.

Did you know? The hardened, organic-rich layer that holds the water above the island's water table is known locally as coffee rock, after its dark brown colour.

The Daintree is a rainforest that reaches the sea.

Did you know? The idiot fruit seed is so toxic that even cassowaries, which swallow most rainforest fruit whole, leave it alone.

How this list is ranked

Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ€” the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.

Questions people ask

What are the most beautiful places in Queensland?
On our list, Great Barrier Reef ranks first, followed by K'gari and Lamington National Park.
What is a perched lake?
A perched lake sits above the water table, held in place by a layer of compacted sand, organic matter and plant debris that stops it draining away. It is fed only by rain; K'gari holds some of the best-known examples in the world, Lake McKenzie among them.
Why is the sand at Whitehaven Beach so white?
Whitehaven's sand is almost pure silica, around 98 percent, which makes it very white and very fine. Silica reflects heat well, so the sand stays relatively cool underfoot.
Why is K'gari no longer called Fraser Island?
In 2023 the island officially returned to its Butchulla name, K'gari, meaning paradise. The name Fraser Island came from Eliza Fraser, who was shipwrecked nearby in 1836.
What kinds of places are there to see in Queensland?
In our collection, the places in Queensland are most often islands (2), national parks (2), nature sanctuaries (2) and lakes (1).
