The Most Beautiful Places in the Scottish Highlands

11 places ยท updated 13 October 2026

In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful places in the Scottish Highlands are Quiraing, Eilean Donan Castle and Glenfinnan Viaduct. The list covers 11 places. Last updated 13 October 2026.

The Scottish Highlands are built from some of the oldest rocks in Europe, folded and lifted into mountains long ago and then scoured by Ice Age glaciers into deep glens, sea lochs and lonely peaks. The Great Glen cuts straight across them along a geological fault, and on Skye ancient lava flows have slumped into cliffs and pinnacles. A thin population and a long history of clans, castles and roads built for armies give the land its particular emptiness.

On the Isle of Skye the Trotternish ridge holds two of the most famous rock landscapes in Britain: the Quiraing, a jumble of landslip towers and hidden plateaus, and the Old Man of Storr, a basalt pinnacle standing beneath the cliffs. In Glen Brittle, the Fairy Pools step down the River Brittle in clear blue basins below the Cuillin. In the far north-west, Suilven rises alone as a long sandstone ridge from a plain of ancient gneiss and lochans.

The Great Glen holds the human landmarks. Urquhart Castle stands in ruins on a headland above Loch Ness, and at Banavie, Neptune's Staircase lifts Thomas Telford's Caledonian Canal through a flight of eight locks. Further west, the curving Glenfinnan Viaduct carries the West Highland line above the head of Loch Shiel, one of the first great bridges built of mass concrete.

    Quiraing, United Kingdom

At the northern end of Skye, the long Trotternish ridge breaks apart into one of the strangest landscapes in Britain. The Quiraing โ€” in Gaelic Cuith-Raing โ€” lies on the eastern face of Meall na Suiramach, the ridge's northernmost summit, where cliffs, towers and grassy hollows tumble in disorder towards the sea.

Did you know? Landslip blocks up to 70 metres high have dammed a chain of small lochs inside the slide, the longest of them, Loch Fada, over 300 metres long.

    United Kingdom57.274ยฐ N 5.516ยฐ W

    Eilean Donan Castle, United Kingdom

Eilean Donan stands on a small rocky island where three sea lochs meet โ€“ Loch Duich, Loch Long and Loch Alsh โ€“ on the road to the Isle of Skye. A long, arched stone bridge leads out to it, and at high tide the castle seems to float, its grey walls reflected in still water against a backdrop of steep green hills.

Did you know? Before the Battle of Sheriffmuir in 1715, Macrae clansmen are said to have danced on the castle roof; 58 of them died in the battle.

The Glenfinnan Viaduct carries the single-track West Highland Line in a long curve across the valley of the River Finnan at the head of Loch Shiel, and it is hard to imagine a railway placed more beautifully.

Did you know? The arches follow a curve with a radius of about 240 metres (792 feet), which gives the viaduct its sweeping crescent shape.

    Urquhart Castle, United Kingdom

Urquhart Castle owes its fame as much to its position as to its stones. It stands on Strone Point, a rocky headland that pushes out into Loch Ness from the north-western shore, so the ruins are wrapped on three sides by dark water and look straight down the length of the Great Glen.

Did you know? The name comes from the early form Airdchartdan, combining Gaelic and Brittonic words for a promontory and a thicket or wood.

North and west of the Highland Boundary Fault, which cuts across Scotland in a near-straight line from Arran to Stonehaven, the land changes character abruptly: ancient Precambrian and Cambrian rock lifted in the Caledonian mountain-building, then scoured by Ice Age glaciers into deep glens, long lochs and summits ofโ€ฆ

Did you know? Most individual clan tartans were assigned only in the early 19th century, during the tartan craze that followed the royal visit.

  6. 06 Isle of Skye

    United Kingdom57.350ยฐ N 6.300ยฐ W

    Isle of Skye, United Kingdom

Skye is shaped like a hand of rock spread out on the sea: a mountainous core, and from it a ring of peninsulas โ€” Trotternish, Waternish, Duirinish, Minginish, Sleat โ€” separated by sea lochs that cut so deep that nowhere on the island is more than about 8 km from salt water.

Did you know? Skye was under Norwegian rule until the 1266 Treaty of Perth, and Norse settlers erased every older place name except that of the island itself.

    United Kingdom57.507ยฐ N 6.175ยฐ W

Old Man of Storr, United Kingdom

The Old Man of Storr is a single pinnacle of dark basalt, about fifty metres tall, standing on a grassy slope below the cliffs of the Storr on the Trotternish peninsula of the Isle of Skye.

Did you know? NVA's 2005 installation ran from 1 August to 17 September, with music by Geir Jenssen and Paul Mounsey, live Gaelic song and the poetry of Sorley MacLean.

    United Kingdom58.115ยฐ N 5.137ยฐ W

    Suilven, United Kingdom

Seen from the coast at Lochinver, Suilven looks less like a mountain than a single tower of rock standing alone on a plain of bog and lochans. In reality it is a narrow ridge about two kilometres long, and from the side it shows three tops strung along a sheer-sided crest; from either end it appears as a sugarloaf.

Did you know? Traversing the whole ridge demands very exposed scrambling, especially on the narrow crest between Meall Meadhonach and Meall Beag.

At Banavie, on the northern edge of Fort William, the Caledonian Canal begins its climb out of the sea lochs into the Great Glen with a flight of eight locks built one against the next, so that each gate serves two chambers at once.

Did you know? The locks were enlarged during planning so that 32-gun naval frigates and ships trading with the Baltic could pass through.

Below the black, jagged wall of the Cuillin on the Isle of Skye, a mountain burn tumbles down a rocky corrie in a chain of small waterfalls, each spilling into a pool of startlingly clear, blue-green water.

Did you know? Fighting in the corrie began late in the day and carried on into the night, ending with the MacLeod commander Alasdair and some thirty kinsmen taken prisoner.

Neist Point is one of the most westerly points of the Isle of Skye, a narrow finger of land that runs out into the Minch, and its lighthouse sits right at the tip.

Did you know? The hill at the tip of the point is called An t-Aigeach, Gaelic for the Stallion, and rises about 95 metres.

How this list is ranked

Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ€” the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
