In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful places in Tajikistan are Karakul Lake, Vanjyakh (Fedchenko) Glacier and Sarez Lake. The list covers 5 places. Last updated 13 October 2026.
Tajikistan is almost entirely mountains. The Pamirs in the east, often called the Roof of the World, rise into a cold high plateau ringed by peaks above seven thousand metres, while the Fann Mountains and the ranges of the west are steeper, greener and cut by deep valleys. Young, still-rising mountains mean glaciers, earthquakes and landslides, and these forces have made the country's most memorable scenery: lakes dammed by fallen mountainsides, lakes in vast dry basins, and some of the longest ice streams outside the polar regions.
The Vanjyakh Glacier, long known as the Fedchenko, is the giant among them, a river of ice running for around seventy-seven kilometres through the central Pamirs and usually described as the longest glacier outside the polar regions. Sarez Lake has a younger story: it formed after an earthquake in 1911 brought down a mountainside that blocked the Murghab River, creating the Usoi Dam, the tallest dam on Earth, natural or man-made, and a long turquoise lake behind it.
Karakul lies in the high eastern Pamirs at roughly 3,900 metres, a wide lake in a stark basin surrounded by bare mountains, where the air is thin and the water an intense blue. In the west, the Fann Mountains hold two very different jewels. Iskanderkul, named after Alexander the Great, is a mountain lake beneath rocky peaks with a waterfall on its outflow. Nearby, the Seven Lakes, Haft Kul, form a chain of lakes stepping up the Shing valley, each a different shade from turquoise to deep green.

Karakul is a great sheet of blue water lying at 3,960 metres in the high, bare plateau of the eastern Pamirs, ringed by snow peaks and almost without vegetation. Its name means "black lake" in Kyrgyz.
Did you know? The island off the northern shore is about 8 kilometres long and 4 kilometres wide, and a strait only about a kilometre wide links the two basins.

The Vanjyakh Glacier, long known to the world as the Fedchenko Glacier, is the longest glacier on Earth outside the polar regions.
Did you know? During the International Geophysical Year of 1957โ1959, a glaciological station operated high on the upper glacier at about 4,900 m.

High in the Pamirs, a long ribbon of turquoise water fills a valley that held only a river until a winter night in 1911. Sarez Lake lies at about 3,260 metres above sea level in the Rushon District of Gorno-Badakhshan, eastern Tajikistan, hemmed in by slopes that climb more than two kilometres above its surface.
Did you know? At least nine earlier landslide lakes formed in the same valley over the Quaternary and vanished when their natural dams gave way.

Iskanderkul is a sheet of milky turquoise water held high in the Fann Mountains of Tajikistan, at 2,195 metres on the northern flank of the Gissar Range. Bare, steep ridges rise straight from its shores, and the colour of the lake shifts with the light against the bare rock.
Did you know? Nearby Zamin-Mulla, nicknamed Snake Lake by hikers, has warmer water and richer life than Iskanderkul despite lying so close to it.

Seven lakes hang one above another in a single valley of the Fann Mountains, and no two of them are quite the same colour: turquoise, deep blue, violet, even rust-red, depending on the minerals in the water and the way the light falls into the gorge.
Did you know? Hazorchashma, the highest lake, is fed not only by springs but also by two mountain streams, the Gissar and the Darakhti Surkh.
Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
