In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful places in Western Cape are Cape of Good Hope, Table Mountain and Cango Caves. The list covers 7 places. Last updated 13 October 2026.
The Western Cape is the southwestern corner of Africa, where the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean draw close and folded sandstone mountains run down to the sea. It has a Mediterranean climate unlike the rest of South Africa, and it is the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom, the smallest of the world's floral kingdoms yet one of the richest, with thousands of plant species that grow nowhere else. Cape Town, the country's oldest colonial city, grew at the foot of its most famous mountain.
Table Mountain rises directly behind the city, its flat sandstone summit often covered by a white cloth of cloud. The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway carries visitors to the top in cars with rotating floors, and on the mountain's eastern slopes Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is devoted almost entirely to the native flora of southern Africa. On the False Bay shore, Boulders Beach is home to a colony of African penguins nesting among granite boulders.
Inland, beyond the coastal ranges, the Cango Caves near Oudtshoorn open into great chambers of stalactites and dripstone formed in limestone of the Little Karoo. Back in Cape Town, the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa occupies a former grain silo at the waterfront, its concrete tubes carved out to form a soaring central atrium. Mountain, garden, coast, cave and gallery sit within a few hours of each other.

Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
