The Most Beautiful Sculptures in France

5 places · updated 14 October 2026

In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful sculptures in France are Psyche Revived by Cupid's Kiss, Venus de Milo and Winged Victory of Samothrace. The list covers 5 sculptures. Last updated 14 October 2026.

France collected sculpture the way it built palaces: on a royal and then a national scale. Napoleon's campaigns, 19th-century diplomats and excavators all fed the Louvre, so masterpieces of Hellenistic Greece and Neoclassical Italy now stand a few rooms apart in Paris, while a priest on the Breton coast showed that a sculpture can also be cut straight into a cliff.

The Winged Victory of Samothrace, found on the Aegean island in 1863, lands on the prow of a stone ship at the top of the Louvre's Daru staircase, her marble drapery pressed back by an invisible wind. The Venus de Milo, discovered on Melos in 1820, is a Hellenistic Aphrodite whose missing arms have fuelled two centuries of reconstructions. Antonio Canova's Psyche Revived by Cupid's Kiss turns two figures into a single open spiral of wings and arms. On the granite shore near Saint-Malo, the Rochers sculptés de Rothéneuf hold hundreds of faces and creatures carved by the Abbé Fouré in the late 19th century.

In the Louvre the work stands in the Denon wing, on the ground floor, in the Michelangelo Gallery, among Italian sculpture. Paris, the French capital on the Seine, has housed its national collections in the former royal palace of the Louvre since the late 18th century.

Did you know? A full-scale plaster model Canova made for the second version is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Look closely and the statue tells its own story: the flesh polished smooth, chisel marks left elsewhere, the back finished less carefully, suggesting it was made to be seen from the front, perhaps in a niche. Her current room, where she has stood since 2010, displays the other sculptural fragments found with her.

Did you know? Scholars have imagined her holding a shield like the Aphrodite of Perge, or embracing a companion figure, possibly Mars, in a lost group.

The Nike is only one draw in the Louvre, the most visited museum in the world, which fills the former royal palace in the centre of Paris beside the Tuileries Gardens. Since 1993 the main entrance has been the hall beneath I. M. Pei's glass pyramid in the Cour Napoléon.

Did you know? The wing joints are tilted forward by about 20 degrees so the heavy wings could be cantilevered out behind the body.

Saint-Malo, to which Rothéneuf now belongs, is the old walled port at the mouth of the Rance, famous for its sea captains, privateers and the granite ramparts that still enclose its rebuilt old town.

Did you know? Locals called him the Hermit of Rothéneuf, and he is often described as a Breton counterpart to the Facteur Cheval.

How this list is ranked

Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented — the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.

Questions people ask

What are the most beautiful sculptures in France?
On our list, Psyche Revived by Cupid's Kiss ranks first, followed by Venus de Milo and Winged Victory of Samothrace.
Why does the Venus de Milo have no arms?
The arms were already missing when the statue was found on the island of Melos in 1820, and they have never been recovered. Fragments of a hand holding an apple were found nearby, but whether they belong to the statue is still debated.
Who made the Winged Victory of Samothrace?
The sculptor is unknown. The statue is a Hellenistic work of the early 2nd century BC, probably set up to commemorate a naval victory, which is why the goddess stands on the prow of a ship.
Who carved the Rochers sculptés de Rothéneuf?
Abbé Adolphe Julien Fouré, a retired priest, carved the granite rocks near Saint-Malo over many years at the end of the 19th century, peopling them with figures linked to local legends of a family of corsairs.
