In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful UNESCO-listed cathedrals in Asia are Saint Isaac's Cathedral (Russia), Etchmiadzin Cathedral (Armenia) and Cathedral of Saint Demetrius (Russia). The list covers 5 UNESCO-listed cathedrals in 2 countries. Russia has the most, with 4. Last updated 14 October 2026.
The cathedrals here are rarely listed by UNESCO on their own. Each belongs to a larger ensemble that tells the story of a church and a state growing together: the founding see of an ancient Christian nation, the kremlin of a medieval trading republic, the white stone churches of a princely capital and the imperial centre of a city built on a river delta. The listing values the cathedral as the heart of that whole, and the buildings range across some fifteen centuries of Christian architecture.
Etchmiadzin Cathedral, in Vagharshapat, is the mother church of the Armenian Apostolic Church; tradition dates its founding to the early 4th century, soon after Armenia adopted Christianity as its state religion, and it is often called one of the oldest cathedrals in the world. Saint Sophia Cathedral in Veliky Novgorod, built in the mid-11th century inside the city's kremlin, is one of the oldest surviving churches of its tradition, crowned by a cluster of helmet-shaped domes.
In Vladimir, the Cathedral of Saint Demetrius, built in the 1190s, is a compact white limestone church whose upper walls are covered with carved saints, lions, griffins and plants, making it a high point of medieval stone carving. Saint Isaac's Cathedral in St Petersburg belongs to an entirely different age: designed by Auguste de Montferrand and built between 1818 and 1858, it rises behind porticoes of monolithic red granite columns beneath a gilded dome that is visible across the city.

The cathedral of Saint Demetrius was built not for a city but for a prince. Grand Prince Vsevolod III of Vladimir, called "Big Nest" for his many children, raised it at his court in the 1190s and dedicated it to Demetrius of Thessaloniki, his own patron saint; it was completed in 1197, when an icon of the saint and a relic of his blood-stained shirt were brought in.

The Cathedral of Holy Wisdom inside the Novgorod kremlin is among the oldest buildings in Russia still used for its original purpose. It was built between 1045 and 1050 by Prince Vladimir of Novgorod, son of Yaroslav the Wise, and Bishop Luka Zhidiata, replacing a wooden cathedral, and rises about 38 metres to a golden central dome.
Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
