The Most Beautiful UNESCO-Listed Coral Reefs in the World

5 places in 4 countries ยท updated 14 October 2026

In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful UNESCO-listed coral reefs in the world are Great Barrier Reef (Australia), Aldabra (Seychelles) and Belize Barrier Reef (Belize). The list covers 5 UNESCO-listed coral reefs in 4 countries. Australia has the most, with 2. Last updated 14 October 2026.

Coral reefs are built by living animals, tiny polyps that lay down limestone skeletons over thousands of years, and the largest reefs are the biggest structures made by life on Earth. The reefs inscribed as World Heritage are the ones that remain closest to their natural state and show the full range of reef forms, from barrier reefs running parallel to a coast to atolls rising alone in the open ocean.

The Great Barrier Reef off Queensland is the largest coral reef system in the world, a chain of thousands of individual reefs and hundreds of islands stretching for more than 2,000 kilometres, and it was among the first natural sites on the list. On the opposite side of the continent, Ningaloo Reef is a fringing reef that lies so close to the shore that coral gardens begin a short swim from the beach, and it is known for the whale sharks that gather there each year.

Other reefs here show other forms. The Belize Barrier Reef, the largest barrier reef in the Northern Hemisphere, includes the Great Blue Hole, a near-perfect circular sinkhole in the middle of Lighthouse Reef. Tubbataha in the Sulu Sea consists of two remote atolls far from any inhabited island, which has kept its walls of coral and its schools of fish exceptionally rich. Aldabra in the Seychelles is a raised coral atoll whose lagoon and mangroves shelter the largest population of giant tortoises in the world.

At around 344,400 square kilometers and roughly 2,300 km long, the Great Barrier Reef isn't one reef so much as some 3,000 individual reefs and hundreds of islands strung together โ€” a footprint about the size of Italy or Japan, and by most measures the largest living structure ever built by living organisms, coral included.

Did you know? On 11 June 1770 James Cook's ship Endeavour ran aground on the reef, and repairing her took about seven weeks.

Aldabra is one of the great natural wonders of the Indian Ocean: a ring of low coral islands around a vast, shallow lagoon, far out in the south-western corner of the Seychelles. It is the second-largest coral atoll on Earth after Kiritimati and the largest raised coral reef, about 34 km long and 13 km wide.

Did you know? The atoll is made up of some 46 islands, and its highest point is an unnamed sand dune only about 16 metres above the sea.

The Belize Barrier Reef runs for roughly 300 km parallel to the Caribbean coast of Belize, a long pale line of breaking surf a few kilometres to some tens of kilometres offshore, with a shallow turquoise lagoon behind it and deep blue water beyond.

Did you know? The World Heritage reserve system covers about 960 square kilometres across seven marine protected areas.

Tubbataha sits in the middle of the Sulu Sea, about 150 km southeast of Puerto Princesa, with nothing around it but open water. The protected area spans roughly 970 kmยฒ and takes in two large atolls, the North and South Atolls, and the smaller Jessie Beazley Reef some 20 km to the north. The name comes from Sama-Bajau words meaning a long reef that surfaces at low tide.

Did you know? A subspecies of the black noddy, a small dark tern, breeds nowhere in the world except Tubbataha, nesting in the few trees and bushes of its islets.

Ningaloo is a reef you can wade out to. Along the coast of Western Australia's North West Cape, the coral grows not far beyond the beach โ€” in places less than 500 metres offshore โ€” so that you can step off white sand into a lagoon and float straight over coral gardens.

Did you know? The World Heritage area protects more than 700,000 hectares of reef, sea and arid cape, some 1,200 km north of Perth.

How this list is ranked

Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ€” the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
