The Most Beautiful UNESCO-Listed Islands in Australia

5 places ยท updated 14 October 2026

In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful UNESCO-listed islands in Australia are Great Barrier Reef, K'gari and Lord Howe Island. The list covers 5 UNESCO-listed islands. Last updated 14 October 2026.

Australia's World Heritage islands owe their character to the continent's long isolation and to the warm and cold currents that wash its coasts. Coral grows on the tropical shelf of Queensland and along the arid north-west, where the warm Leeuwin Current runs close to land; sand carried north for millennia has built the largest sand island on Earth; and in the Southern Ocean, the meeting of tectonic plates has lifted a piece of the sea floor into the air. Each island here is protected for something it shows better than anywhere else.

The Great Barrier Reef is less a single island than an archipelago of reefs, cays and continental islands spread along the Queensland coast, the largest coral reef system in the world. To its south, K'gari, the Butchulla name now officially restored to Fraser Island, carries rainforest, coloured sand cliffs and dozens of freshwater lakes, many of them perched in hollows of the dunes high above sea level.

Lord Howe Island, in the Tasman Sea, is the eroded remnant of a volcano, with Mount Gower and Mount Lidgbird rising over a lagoon fringed by the southernmost coral reef on Earth. On the far side of the continent, Ningaloo Reef runs so close to the shore of Western Australia that it can be reached from the beach, and whale sharks feed along it each year. Macquarie Island, halfway to Antarctica, is made of rock from the oceanic crust and the mantle, raised above the waves and now home to vast colonies of penguins and seals.

At around 344,400 square kilometers and roughly 2,300 km long, the Great Barrier Reef isn't one reef so much as some 3,000 individual reefs and hundreds of islands strung together โ€” a footprint about the size of Italy or Japan, and by most measures the largest living structure ever built by living organisms, coral included.

Did you know? On 11 June 1770 James Cook's ship Endeavour ran aground on the reef, and repairing her took about seven weeks.

K'gari, known for a century and a half as Fraser Island, is the largest sand island in the world: some 123 km of dunes, forest and lakes off the coast of Queensland, built up over roughly 750,000 years from sand carried north by coastal currents onto a volcanic bedrock base.

Lord Howe Island is a crescent of land in the Tasman Sea, about ten kilometres long and in places barely three hundred metres wide, lying some 600 km east of Port Macquarie on the Australian coast. Its drama is concentrated at the southern end, where Mount Lidgbird (777 m) and Mount Gower (875 m) rise almost sheer from the water, their summits often wrapped in cloud.

Did you know? No trace of prehistoric human presence has ever been found, even after a 1996 archaeological search, which is unusual for a Pacific island of its size.

Ningaloo is a reef you can wade out to. Along the coast of Western Australia's North West Cape, the coral grows not far beyond the beach โ€” in places less than 500 metres offshore โ€” so that you can step off white sand into a lagoon and float straight over coral gardens.

Did you know? The World Heritage area protects more than 700,000 hectares of reef, sea and arid cape, some 1,200 km north of Perth.

Macquarie Island is a piece of the Earth's interior pushed up into the air. Most ocean crust stays hidden under kilometres of water. Here a slice of oceanic crust and the mantle rock beneath it has been forced above sea level. It is the only place on Earth where rocks from the mantle are being actively exposed above sea level at a mid-ocean ridge.

How this list is ranked

Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ€” the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.

Questions people ask

What are the most beautiful UNESCO-listed islands in Australia?
On our list, Great Barrier Reef ranks first, followed by K'gari and Lord Howe Island.
Why was Fraser Island renamed K'gari?
K'gari is the name used by the Butchulla people, the island's traditional owners, and is usually translated as paradise. The Queensland government officially restored it in 2023, and the World Heritage listing now uses it.
What is Ball's Pyramid?
Ball's Pyramid is a sheer volcanic stack rising from the sea about 20 kilometres south-east of Lord Howe Island. It is part of the Lord Howe Island Group World Heritage site and is often described as the tallest sea stack in the world.
How is Ningaloo Reef different from the Great Barrier Reef?
Ningaloo is a fringing reef that lies just off the beach, often only a short swim away, while most of the Great Barrier Reef sits far offshore. Ningaloo is also known for its seasonal gatherings of whale sharks.
How many UNESCO-listed islands are on this list in Australia?
The list covers 5 UNESCO-listed islands.
