In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the United States are Yellowstone National Park, Statue of Liberty and Grand Canyon National Park. The list covers 7 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Last updated 14 October 2026.
The United States played a central role in the idea of World Heritage itself: it created the world's first national park at Yellowstone in 1872, and it was the first country to ratify the World Heritage Convention adopted in 1972. Its sites reflect that history, with a strong emphasis on wilderness preserved on a vast scale, alongside a smaller group of monuments and buildings that changed how the world thinks about freedom and architecture.
Yellowstone National Park sits on top of a volcanic hotspot and contains about half of the world's active geysers, including Old Faithful, together with the rainbow-coloured hot springs of the Grand Prismatic. The Grand Canyon, carved by the Colorado River, exposes layers of rock spanning nearly two billion years of Earth's history. In California, Yosemite National Park holds granite walls such as El Capitan and Half Dome, high waterfalls and groves of giant sequoias.
The cultural sites are fewer but no less famous. The Statue of Liberty, a gift from France designed by Frรฉdรฉric Auguste Bartholdi with an internal framework by Gustave Eiffel, was dedicated in New York Harbor in 1886. Two works by Frank Lloyd Wright show how far American architecture travelled in the twentieth century: Fallingwater, a house in Pennsylvania cantilevered over a waterfall, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, where the galleries form a single spiral ramp rising around an open rotunda.

On 1 March 1872, Ulysses S. Grant signed a piece of legislation that had no real precedent anywhere in the world: setting aside more than two million acres of Wyoming and Montana territory not for a king, a church, or a private estate, but simply to be left alone.
Did you know? Two-thirds of all the world's geysers are in Yellowstone, and at least 1,283 have erupted there, with around 465 active in a typical year.

The name most people reach for is Bartholdi, and that's correct as far as it goes โ Frรฉdรฉric Auguste Bartholdi conceived the whole figure, from her raised torch to the broken chains at her feet, and sculpted the copper skin that visitors actually see, a figure standing some 46 metres from base to torch. What's murkier, and worth untangling, is who built what's actually holding her up.
Did you know? The tablet in her left hand is inscribed JULY IV MDCCLXXVI, the date of the American Declaration of Independence in Roman numerals.

Grand Canyon National Park protects a chasm that the Colorado River and its tributaries cut into the Colorado Plateau after the plateau was lifted. The walls expose a staircase of coloured rock reaching back to Precambrian time, so that every viewpoint is also a cross-section through geological history โ reds, buffs and greys banding the cliffs, and the river a thin line far below.
Did you know? The canyon's rocks span almost two billion years, from the Vishnu Schist in the Inner Gorge to the 270-million-year-old Kaibab Limestone on the rim.

Few landscapes explain their own making as plainly as Yosemite. The park's 1,187 square miles sit on the granite of the Sierra Nevada batholith, rock that cooled deep underground, was lifted and tilted with the range some ten million years ago, and was then worked over by ice.
Did you know? On rare clear evenings in mid to late February, the setting sun backlights Horsetail Fall on the eastern edge of El Capitan so that it glows orange.

The Guggenheim on Fifth Avenue is a museum people visit as much for the building as for the art. Frank Lloyd Wright designed it as a top-heavy spiral that widens as it rises, a shape that looks nothing like the apartment blocks around it on the Upper East Side, facing Central Park.
Did you know? When the commission was being planned in 1943, Hilla von Rebay assumed the 76-year-old Frank Lloyd Wright was already dead until Guggenheim's wife set her straight.

Fallingwater is the house that Frank Lloyd Wright built over a waterfall โ by the 1960s already one of the most discussed modern buildings in the world. It stands in the woods of the Laurel Highlands in southwestern Pennsylvania, on Bear Run, a stream that drops over ledges of sandstone on its way to the Youghiogheny River.
Did you know? After months with nothing on paper, Wright reportedly drew the whole design in about two hours when Kaufmann turned up unexpectedly at Taliesin in September 1935.

Tucked into the sandstone alcoves of a high, canyon-cut tableland in southwestern Colorado are entire villages that Ancestral Pueblo farmers built more than seven centuries ago and then left behind. Mesa Verde โ Spanish for "green table" โ protects close to five thousand archaeological sites, around six hundred of them cliff dwellings, and it is often called the largest archaeological reserve in the United States.
Did you know? Mesa Verde was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978 and is the only one in Colorado.
Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
