Jacob's Well (Texas)
Interesting facts
- In 1924 the spring gushed with such artesian pressure that its water rose about 6 feet into the air above the creek.
- The spring, once thought eternal, stopped flowing for the first time on record in 2000, and ran dry again in 2008, 2011, 2013 and 2022.
- Its water comes from the Trinity Aquifer, whose falling levels from heavy groundwater pumping have weakened the spring to a faint ripple at times.
- Below the 12-foot mouth the shaft drops vertically about 30 feet before the cave angles away into the limestone.
- The deepest point of the main passage lies around 137 feet below the surface.
- Hays County bought the land around the well in 2010, and it is now protected within an 81-acre natural area.
- Of the nine divers who died in the cave between 1964 and 1984, eight were men and one was a woman.
Why it is worth it
Jacob's Well looks like nothing more than a round blue pool at the bottom of Cypress Creek — a 12-foot-wide opening in the limestone that people have swum in for generations. What's underneath is the real attraction and the real danger: a flooded cave system with one passage running roughly 1,370 meters back from the surface and a second branch about 300 meters long, both cut through narrow, disorienting limestone in water that holds close to 20°C year-round.
Nine divers died there between 1964 and 1984, drawn in by clear water and open-water training that doesn't prepare anyone for what's inside. The passages narrow sharply, visibility can collapse to nothing when silt is disturbed, and one section is notorious among cavers as the "false chimney" — a gap that looks like a way through and isn't. Some of the dead weren't recovered for years.
After the fatalities, access was locked down. Diving the cave system today is restricted to members of the Jacob's Well Exploration Project, who continue to survey the passages under permit; everyone else gets the swimming hole on the surface, which on its own is one of the clearest, coldest swimming spots in the Texas Hill Country.
Good to know
- Water stays close to 20°C (68°F) year-round.
- Cave diving is restricted to a permitted exploration group after nine diver deaths between 1964 and 1984; surface swimming remains open and popular.
Getting there
22 km from Canyon Lake. Austin Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) is about 48 km away.
