Interesting facts

  • The view of Kuimen at the mouth of the gorge is printed on the back of China's fifth-series 10-yuan banknote.
  • Tang poets Li Bai, Du Fu, Bai Juyi and Liu Yuxi all wrote about this stretch of river, earning Fengjie the nickname City of Poetry.
  • Du Fu lived in Kuizhou, today's Fengjie, for about two years from the mid-760s, one of the most productive periods of his life.
  • Baidicheng takes its name from Gongsun Shu, who built the town in the late Western Han and proclaimed himself the White Emperor in AD 25.
  • In 1533 the temple at Baidicheng replaced Gongsun Shu with Liu Bei and his chancellor Zhuge Liang as the figures it honoured.
  • The largest characters carved on the Chalk Wall were about 1.7 metres wide, cut in many different calligraphic styles.
  • According to legend, a soldier named Meng Liang cut the stairway holes by night, and fled when a monk imitated a rooster to fake the dawn.
  • According to the same legend, the furious Meng Liang hung the monk upside down from the cliff, which explains the name of Hanging Monk Rock.
  • The tow paths cut for boat haulers along the cliffs, begun in the Han dynasty, were kept in use and repaired until the mid-20th century.
  • Daxi, a village by the gorge, gave its name to the Neolithic Daxi culture, whose first site was discovered there.

Why it is worth it

Qutang is the shortest and the most dramatic of the Three Gorges of the Yangtze. In only about 8 km the great river forces its way between mountains whose walls rise as high as 1,200 metres, and at its narrowest point the channel is just 150 metres wide. The entrance to the gorge, known as Kuimen, is formed by two mountains facing each other across the water, Chijia to the north and Baiyan to the south, standing like the posts of a gigantic gate.

At the upstream end of the gorge stands Baidicheng, the White Emperor City, an ancient fortress town on a hill above the river. It is remembered as the place where Liu Bei, one of the great figures of the Three Kingdoms period, died, and memorial temples there keep his story alive. For centuries the passage of the gorge was a feat of labour: in the Han dynasty a path was cut along the cliffs for the haulers who dragged boats upstream against the current, and a line of rectangular holes in the rock face, known as the Meng Liang Stairway, records another early attempt to climb the walls. On the southern cliff, a surface called the Chalk Wall carried around a thousand carved characters left by calligraphers, the oldest of them from the Song dynasty.

The gorge also holds stranger traces. High on the cliffs are hanging coffins, placed there according to the funerary customs of the ancient Bo people, and named rocks such as Hanging Monk Rock and a spring called Drinking Phoenix Spring add to its store of legends. Since the completion of the Three Gorges Dam downstream, the river has risen considerably, covering many of the lower sites, including the haulers' path, the Meng Liang Stairway and the Chalk Wall, but the cliffs of Kuimen still frame the river as they have for millennia.

The Qutang Gorge is the shortest of China's Three Gorges. Immediately downstream of the ancient Baidicheng (็™ฝๅธๅŸŽ) fortress, the Yangtze River passes between the Chijia Mountain (่ตค็”ฒๅฑฑ) on the north and the Baiyan Mountain (็™ฝ้นฝๅฑฑ) on the south. The point where the river passes between these mountains is called the Kuimen (ๅค”้–€) and it is the entrance to the Qutang Gorge โ€“ the first of the three Yangtze gorges. The Qutang Gorge is only 8 kilometres (5.0ย mi) long, but it is also the narrowest of the Three Gorges. The widest point measures only 150 metres (500ย ft) wide. The mountains on either side reach as high as 1,200 metres (4,000ย ft). This combination of narrow among high mountains with several switchbacks in only 8 kilometres creates spectacular vistas, and the Qutang Gorge is often considered the most beautiful of all Three Gorges.
