Interesting facts

  • Luminescence dating by the Karpinsky Geological Institute, published in 2025, suggests the dune complex began forming about 60,000 years ago.
  • The same study found that the dune grew most actively when the level of the Caspian Sea fell, exposing more sand to the wind.
  • Sarykum is often described as the largest sand dune in Europe and one of the largest in Eurasia.
  • Its name comes from the Kumyk language and means simply "yellow sand".
  • Around 170 bird species have been recorded at the dune and its surroundings.
  • The dune is home to the blunt-nosed viper, or gyurza, the largest venomous snake found in Russia.
  • The Dagestan Nature Reserve that protects the dune was established on 9 January 1987.

Why it is worth it

Sarykum is a single enormous sand dune rising out of the green foothills of Dagestan, some 18 km north-west of Makhachkala, and the sight of it — a golden, rippled ridge set among grassland and mountains near the Caspian — seems almost out of place. The dune is about 3 km long and covers around 1,175 hectares, and its summit is variously given at between 213 and 262 metres. It is the highest point of the Sarykum barchan field, lying under the northern slopes of the Narat-Tyube range on the left bank of the Shura-Ozen river.

How it came to be here is still debated. One explanation, put forward by scientists in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, credits wind working the sands over an immense span of time; another traces the sand to the breakdown of the sandstones of the surrounding hills. Either way, the dune is very old, and wind still carves its crest into ripples and sharp ridges.

Despite its desert look, Sarykum holds water well beneath the surface, and a surprisingly rich life has adapted to it. Botanists have recorded up to 279 plant species here, including endemic irises and other rare plants, and the sands and surrounding steppe support a remarkable variety of insects, reptiles and birds. Since 1987 the dune has been part of the Dagestan Nature Reserve, which protects its fragile surface.

The dune is also a piece of Soviet film history: scenes of the classic White Sun of the Desert were shot on its slopes, standing in for the sands of Central Asia. From the top, the view runs over the dune's ridges to the mountain foothills around it.

Getting there

The dune lies about 18 km north-west of Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan. Makhachkala Uytash International Airport (MCX) is about 40 km away. As a protected area, visits follow the reserve's rules.
