Sheikh Zayed Mosque
Interesting facts
- Its courtyard, about 17,000 square metres of inlaid marble flowers, is considered the largest marble mosaic in the world.
- The courtyard's floral design is by the British artist Kevin Dean, who chose flowers of the Middle East such as tulips, lilies and irises.
- At night the lighting projects bluish-grey clouds onto the outer walls, growing brighter or darker with the phases of the moon.
- The prayer-hall carpet, designed by Iranian artist Ali Khaliqi, has about 2.27 billion knots, weighs around 35 tonnes and was made by some 1,200 knotters.
- Seven chandeliers from Munich hold millions of Swarovski crystals; the largest is about 10 metres across and 15 metres tall.
- The building's main axis is turned about 12 degrees south of true west so that it faces the Kaaba in Mecca.
- The 99 names of God run along the qibla wall in Kufic script by Emirati calligrapher Mohammed Mandi Al Tamimi, lit by subtle fibre optics.
- More than 115,000 square metres of white Sivec marble from Prilep in North Macedonia clad the exterior, minarets included.
- The white marble is inlaid with lapis lazuli, carnelian, amethyst, abalone shell and mother-of-pearl.
- A library inside the northeast minaret holds works on Islamic science, calligraphy, art and coins in languages from Arabic to Korean.
Why it is worth it
The people who planned this mosque weren't going for one look — they wanted the whole story of Islamic architecture in a single building. Walk from the base of a minaret to its tip and you pass through three different empires: a square foundation drawn from Moroccan tradition, an octagonal midsection borrowed from the Mamluks of Cairo, and a cylindrical crown modeled on Ottoman minarets. The dome layout follows the floor plan of Lahore's Badshahi Mosque, a Mughal-era landmark, while the ornamental detail leans toward Persian and Moorish patterns. It reads less like a single architect's vision and more like a deliberate anthology of a millennium of mosque-building.
The numbers back up the ambition: 82 domes of varying sizes, four minarets each 106 metres tall, and a prayer-hall carpet — hand-knotted, 5,700 square metres, the largest of its kind anywhere — that took two years to complete. The mosque covers 12 hectares and can hold more than 40,000 people at once, putting it among the largest mosques on the planet by capacity alone.
None of it happened quickly. Planning began in the late 1980s, construction started on 5 November 1996, and the building didn't open until 20 December 2007 — eleven years of work by craftspeople assembled from around the world. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE's founding president, commissioned it explicitly as a statement about peace, tolerance and coexistence; he is buried on the grounds, which is why the building carries his name rather than a more conventional title.
