Interesting facts

  • The park grew out of Port Disney, an abandoned plan for a sea-themed Disney park in Southern California built around the ocean liner Queen Mary.
  • Reaching ten million guests in 307 days was a world record, beating the 338 days Universal Studios Japan had needed after its opening.
  • Plans for a second Disney park in Tokyo date back to 1987, but ground was not broken until 22 October 1998.
  • Fantasy Springs, the 2024 expansion, cost an estimated 320 billion yen, almost as much as the original park, and covers about 140,000 square metres.
  • Instead of a single main street leading to a central hub, the entrance at Mediterranean Harbor opens out in a V shape around the water.
  • The ride inside Mount Prometheus, Journey to the Center of the Earth, runs on technology similar to that of Epcot's Test Track.
  • Tokyo DisneySea won a Thea Award from the Themed Entertainment Association in 2002 for its design and construction.
  • With about 12.4 million visitors in 2024, it ranked as the seventh most visited theme park in the world.

Why it is worth it

Tokyo DisneySea opened on 4 September 2001 next to Tokyo Disneyland on reclaimed land in Urayasu, on the shore of Tokyo Bay. Unlike most Disney parks, it is not owned by the Walt Disney Company: the Oriental Land Company built and runs the whole Tokyo Disney Resort, paying Disney for the use of its characters and designs. The park cost about 335 billion yen, and its level of detail, in buildings, props and landscaping, is widely considered unusually high even among Disney parks. It reached ten million guests in just 307 days after opening.

The theme is the sea in myth, legend and history, and the park is organised into "ports" rather than lands. Visitors enter through Mediterranean Harbor, a waterside village in the style of Venice and the Italian coast, facing Mount Prometheus, a volcano that serves as the park's icon and periodically erupts. Around it lie Mysterious Island, inside the crater, with Journey to the Center of the Earth; Mermaid Lagoon, themed to The Little Mermaid; the Arabian Coast; the Lost River Delta, set in Central American jungle; Port Discovery; and the American Waterfront, with the Tower of Terror in a New York harbour setting. Fantasy Springs, the eighth port, opened in June 2024 with areas based on Frozen, Tangled and Peter Pan.

The park covers about 61 hectares and is one of the most visited theme parks in the world, with around 12 million guests a year. It is designed with adults in mind as much as children, though the rides are generally gentle rather than extreme. Weekends and Japanese school holidays are very crowded, and a full day is the minimum; many visitors combine it with Tokyo Disneyland on a separate day.

Getting there

The park is in Urayasu, Chiba Prefecture, about 4 km from the city centre and just across the prefectural border from Tokyo. Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) is about 13 km away; Narita, the other main airport for Tokyo, is much further out. By train, take the JR Keiyo Line to Maihama Station, about 15 minutes from Tokyo Station, then change to the Disney Resort Line monorail for the short ride to Tokyo DisneySea Station, right at the main entrance.
