In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful caves in the United States are Luray Caverns, Mammoth Cave and Lechuguilla Cave. The list covers 5 caves. Last updated 13 October 2026.
The United States holds an unusual variety of caves because its limestone was dissolved in two different ways. In Kentucky and Virginia, ordinary rainwater, slightly acidic, carved long passages over millions of years. In New Mexico and South Dakota, acids rising from below created chambers and crystal growths found almost nowhere else.
Luray Caverns in Virginia are richly decorated with stalactites and columns, and in one chamber the Great Stalacpipe Organ taps them with rubber mallets to make music. Mammoth Cave in Kentucky is the longest known cave system on Earth, with more than 400 miles of surveyed passages. Carlsbad Cavern in New Mexico holds the Big Room, one of the largest cave chambers in North America, and summer evenings bring out clouds of bats. Its neighbour Lechuguilla Cave, explored only from 1986, is lined with gypsum chandeliers and delicate aragonite. Wind Cave in South Dakota, the first cave declared a national park, is famous for boxwork, thin blades of calcite in a honeycomb pattern.

The cave developed in Lower Ordovician dolomite and its galleries lie on several levels, with some 260 feet (about 80 metres) between the highest and lowest. A guided walk of about 1.5 miles (2.4 km), lasting 45 minutes to an hour, passes Dream Lake, one of the cave's mirror-still pools, the flowstone drapery of Saracen's Tent, and columns more than 10 metres high. The unique feature is the Great Stalacpipe Organ, devised by Leland W. Sprinkle and in use since 1956: rubber mallets triggered from a keyboard strike 37 stalactites across about 3.5 acres of the cavern, and Guinness World Records lists it as the world's largest musical instrument. The air stays at about 12ยฐC (54ยฐF) year-round.
Did you know? Fragments of a skeleton, thought to be a Native American girl, were found fused into calcite and judged no more than about 500 years old.

Scale is the other reason Mammoth Cave keeps its name: more than 680 kilometers of passage have been mapped, making it comfortably the longest known cave system on Earth, and park geologists think there may be another several hundred kilometers still unmapped beneath the same hills.
Did you know? In 1972 a six-person team finally joined the Flint Ridge system to Mammoth Cave; the decisive squeeze, the Tight Spot, was passed by Patricia Crowther, who weighed just 115 pounds.

None of it is visible to the public the way Carlsbad Caverns next door is. Lechuguilla has never been developed for tourism and never will be: access is limited to scientific researchers, survey teams, and National Park Service management trips, because the formations are fragile enough that a stray footprint or a shift in the cave's air chemistry can damage speleothems that took hundreds of thousands of years to grow. That isolation has also made the cave a target for microbiologists studying bacteria that evolved cut off from the surface for a very long time.
Did you know? Before 1986 the known cave was just a 27-metre entrance pit called Misery Hole and about 120 metres of dry, dead-end passage.

The finest approach is on foot through the Natural Entrance, a vast opening in the hillside from which a steep paved trail descends about 230 metres in two kilometres, past formations named Devil's Spring, Whale's Mouth and Iceberg Rock, until daylight gives way entirely to darkness. Between spring and autumn the entrance has a second life: at dusk a colony of Mexican free-tailed bats pours out of it into the evening sky to hunt, one of the great wildlife spectacles of the American South-West.
Did you know? In the early 1960s, when the cave was tested as a fallout shelter, scientists watched Green Lake for ripples from a distant underground nuclear test; none appeared.

Long before the Binghams, the Lakota knew the hole that blew air. In their tradition it is Washun Niya, the place where the first people emerged from the underworld onto the surface of the earth. After the discovery, a mining company sent Jesse McDonald to the site; no ore was found, and the McDonald family turned to exploring and guiding instead, leading candlelit tours from 1892. On 3 January 1903 President Theodore Roosevelt made the area the sixth national park in the United States and the first anywhere created to protect a cave. Above ground, the park's mixed-grass prairie is home to a free-roaming, genetically pure bison herd, along with elk, pronghorn and prairie-dog towns.
Did you know? The cave lies in three levels within the upper 76 metres of limestone laid down in a Mississippian sea more than 300 million years ago.
Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
