5 places ยท updated 13 October 2026

In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful places in Amhara are Simien Mountains National Park, Church of Saint George, Lalibela and Fasil Ghebbi. The list covers 5 places. Last updated 13 October 2026.

Amhara is the high heart of Ethiopia: a plateau broken by escarpments and gorges, with Lake Tana feeding the Blue Nile at its centre. For many centuries it was the core of the Christian Ethiopian kingdom, and that long history left churches cut into living rock, castles in a royal capital and monasteries scattered through the highlands, all set in some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in Africa.

The Simien Mountains are a plateau of jagged peaks and sheer cliffs, home to gelada monkeys and the rare walia ibex, and include Ras Dashen, the highest mountain in Ethiopia. Below Lake Tana, the Blue Nile Falls pour over a basalt ledge in a broad curtain of water, known locally as Tis Issat, the smoking water.

At Lalibela, the Church of Saint George was carved downward into volcanic rock in the shape of a cross, its roof level with the ground around it. In Gondar, the walled enclosure of Fasil Ghebbi holds the castles of seventeenth-century emperors, a blend of Ethiopian, Portuguese and Indian building traditions. Debre Berhan Selassie Church in the same city is known for its ceiling painted with rows of winged angels' faces.

Simien Mountains National Park protects the highest part of the Simien massif in northern Ethiopia, one of the most dramatic landscapes in Africa.

Did you know? The walia ibex came close to vanishing: in the mid-1990s only about 200 to 250 survived, but by 2004 the count had roughly doubled to around 500.

Of the eleven churches cut from the rock at Lalibela, Bete Giyorgis, the Church of Saint George, is the one that has become the emblem of Ethiopia.

Did you know? It is thought to be the last built of Lalibela's eleven rock-hewn churches, and is often judged the most finely executed and best preserved of them.

Fasil Ghebbi is a castle compound unlike anything else in Africa: a walled royal enclosure in the middle of Gondar, filled with palaces built by successive Ethiopian emperors. Until the seventeenth century the emperors ruled from moving camps, living in tents as they travelled across their realm.

Did you know? The Beta Israel masons came largely from the Kayla clan, whose trades of stonework, smithing and carpentry were looked down on by wider society.

Shortly after leaving Lake Tana, the Blue Nile tumbles over a 42-metre rock ledge in several broad streams, throwing up a cloud of spray that gives the falls their Amharic name, Tis Abay โ€” "great smoke".

Did you know? Cut off by the falls, Lake Tana upstream holds 27 fish species, 20 of them found nowhere else, including 15 large barbs that grow up to a metre long.

Debre Berhan Selassie โ€” "the Mountain of the Light of the Trinity" โ€” stands on a low rise at the north-eastern edge of Gondar, the city from which Ethiopia's emperors ruled for two centuries.

Did you know? Local tradition credits most of the paintings to a 17th-century master named Haile Meskel, but scholars now date them to roughly 1815โ€“1825.

How this list is ranked

Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ€” the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
