The Most Beautiful Places in Azerbaijan

8 places ยท updated 13 October 2026

In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful places in Azerbaijan are Palace of the Shirvanshahs, Heydar Aliyev Center and Palace of Shaki Khans. The list covers 8 places. Last updated 13 October 2026.

Azerbaijan lies between the Caucasus and the Caspian Sea, on a crossroads where Persian, Turkic, Arab and Russian worlds met. Its old name of the Land of Fire comes from the natural gas that seeps from the ground and once burned openly on the Absheron Peninsula, drawing fire worshippers from afar. Silk Road trade enriched its towns, and medieval dynasties such as the Shirvanshahs left stone palaces and mausoleums that sit today beside some of the boldest modern architecture in the region.

The walled Old City of Baku holds two of the country's emblems: the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, a 15th-century complex of halls, tombs and a mosque in honey-coloured stone, and the Maiden Tower, a massive cylindrical tower whose origins are still debated. On the edge of the city, the Ateshgah fire temple was built around natural gas vents and used by Hindu and Zoroastrian worshippers. Zaha Hadid's Heydar Aliyev Center answers with a white shell of flowing curves without a single sharp angle.

Beyond Baku, the rock carvings of Gobustan record thousands of years of human life on the Caspian shore, among mud volcanoes and boulder fields. In Shaki, the 18th-century Palace of the Shaki Khans glows with shebeke windows of coloured glass. Nakhchivan keeps the 12th-century Momine Khatun Mausoleum, a tall decagonal tower covered with geometric ornament, and high in the Greater Caucasus the stone village of Khinalig keeps its own language.

The Palace of the Shirvanshahs crowns the highest point of Baku's walled Old City, a compact ensemble of stone buildings from the fifteenth century. The Shirvanshahs were the long-lived dynasty of Shirvan, and under Ibrahim I they moved their capital to Baku after an earthquake devastated their old seat at Shamakhi.

Did you know? The eastern portal, known as Murad's Gate, is dated by its inscription to 1585โ€“86, during the Ottoman occupation of Baku.

Few buildings anywhere look so little like buildings. The Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku rises out of its landscaped hill as a single white surface that folds, swells and peels away from the ground, turning wall into roof and roof into plaza without a visible seam or a single hard corner.

Did you know? The July 2012 fire began on the roof through careless use of welding equipment, and three contractors faced criminal charges afterwards.

It was the summer residence of the rulers of the Shaki Khanate and is usually dated to 1797, under Muhammad Husayn Khan Mushtaq.

Did you know? During the 1955โ€“1965 restoration, a workshop was set up in the upper ceremonial hall and the architects lived in the rooms beside it.

Baku, Azerbaijan's capital on the Caspian Sea, keeps its medieval heart inside the walls of the Old City, Icherisheher, and the Maiden Tower is its emblem. 5 m at the base.

Did you know? The pipes were thrown on a potter's wheel and joined with lime mortar, and their sediments could one day help date the tower scientifically.

About 70 km south-west of Baku, where the dry hills of the Caspian coast break up into boulder fields and flat-topped mesas, Gobustan preserves one of the richest bodies of rock art in the world.

Did you know? Rows of linked dancing figures are often compared to yalli, the traditional round dance still performed in Azerbaijan today.

Ten flat faces of brick, each one entirely covered in interlocking geometric patterns, rise from a stone plinth on the edge of old Nakhchivan. The Momine Khatun Mausoleum was raised in 1186, and even without its lost upper part it still stands about 25 metres tall; originally the tower reached roughly 34 metres.

Did you know? The crypt's vault rests on a single mushroom-shaped central pillar from which pointed arches spring outward.

Khinalug is the highest and most isolated village in Azerbaijan, a cluster of stone houses at about 2,180 metres on a bare ridge of the Greater Caucasus, ringed by peaks and cut off from the lowlands by deep gorges.

A pentagonal walled courtyard with an open fire altar at its heart, the Ateshgah of Baku stands on ground where natural gas once seeped from the earth and burned on its own.

Did you know? In 1925 the Parsi scholar Jivanji Jamshedji Modi travelled to Baku to test its Zoroastrian claims and concluded it was a Hindu fire temple.

How this list is ranked

Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ€” the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
