The Most Beautiful Places in Cornwall

7 places ยท updated 13 October 2026

In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful places in Cornwall are Tintagel Castle, St Michael's Mount and Eden Project. The list covers 7 places. Last updated 13 October 2026.

Cornwall is the granite tip of southwest England, a peninsula almost surrounded by the Atlantic and the English Channel. Its hard rocks made rugged cliffs and sheltered coves, and the same geology carried tin and copper, mined here since prehistory and on an industrial scale in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Celtic language, saints and the legends of King Arthur give the county a character of its own within England.

Tintagel, on the north coast, is where medieval storytelling placed Arthur's conception; the castle ruins visible today were built in the thirteenth century by Richard, Earl of Cornwall, on a headland already occupied in the early Middle Ages. Across the county, St Michael's Mount rises from Mount's Bay, a castle and church on a tidal island reached on foot by a causeway at low tide. At Botallack, engine houses of old mines stand on ledges just above the surf, part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site.

The twentieth century added its own landmarks. The Minack Theatre, an open-air stage carved into the cliffs at Porthcurno, was created largely by Rowena Cade from the 1930s onward. Penzance's Jubilee Pool is an Art Deco seawater lido shaped like a triangle on the rocks. The Eden Project fills a former china clay pit with giant geodesic biomes. And at the Lizard, Kynance Cove shows white sand and turquoise water between stacks of dark red and green serpentine.

Tintagel is the place where Cornish rock, medieval romance and genuine archaeology meet. The castle ruins cling to both sides of a narrow neck of land between the mainland cliffs and a rocky headland known as Tintagel Island, above the Atlantic on Cornwall's north coast.

Did you know? Ten small Roman coins, from Tetricus I in the 270s to Constantius II in the mid-4th century, have turned up, yet no Roman building has been proven.

St Michael's Mount rises out of Mount's Bay off the south coast of Cornwall as a steep granite island crowned by a castle and chapel, joined to the town of Marazion by a causeway of granite setts that the sea covers twice a day.

Did you know? Historians trace the story of the archangel appearing to fishermen to a medieval borrowing from the legend of Mont-Saint-Michel, not to any early local record.

At the bottom of a former china clay pit in Cornwall, a cluster of giant bubbles holds a tropical forest.

Did you know? The roof of the Core education building follows phyllotaxis, the spiral pattern seen in sunflower heads and pine cones.

Botallack is the image of Cornish mining that everyone knows even if they have never heard the name: two roofless stone engine houses, one perched on a ledge just above the surf, the other a little higher up the cliff, with the Atlantic breaking beneath them. These are the Crowns.

Did you know? The deepest workings reached about 250 fathoms, roughly 500 metres below sea level.

Jubilee Pool sits on Battery Rocks at the edge of Penzance, a seawater lido built out into the sea itself. It holds about five million litres of seawater, is roughly 90 m long and 50 m wide, and takes up to 600 swimmers.

Did you know? Before it was built, the pool split the town council, as some members argued the money should go to improving Penzance's water supply instead.

Few theatres have a backdrop like this one. The Minack is cut into a steep granite gully on the cliffs above Porthcurno, at the far western tip of Cornwall, and its terraces of seats step down towards a stage that seems to hang over the Atlantic.

Did you know? The theatre's first proper dressing rooms were only built in 1955, more than twenty years after the opening performance.

Kynance Cove lies on the western side of the Lizard peninsula, roughly two miles north of Lizard Point at the very end of the peninsula. What makes it unlike any other Cornish beach is the rock.

Did you know? The second blowhole earned the name Post Office because its suction is strong enough to swallow a letter.

How this list is ranked

Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ€” the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
