The Most Beautiful Sacred Places in Nepal

5 places ยท updated 13 October 2026

In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful sacred places in Nepal are Pashupatinath Temple, Swayambhunath and Nyatapola Temple. The list covers 5 sacred places. Last updated 13 October 2026.

In Nepal, Hindu and Buddhist worship share the same valleys and often the same courtyards. Newar craftsmen of the Kathmandu Valley perfected the tiered pagoda temple with carved wooden struts, while Tibetan Buddhism built whitewashed stupas and mountain monasteries along the trade and pilgrimage routes to the north.

Pashupatinath, the great Shiva temple on the banks of the Bagmati, is lined with cremation ghats where Hindu funerals take place daily. Swayambhunath crowns a hill west of Kathmandu, its painted eyes of the Buddha looking out in four directions over the city. Nyatapola in Bhaktapur, built in 1702, rises in five roofs above a stair guarded by pairs of stone figures and is the tallest pagoda in the country. Boudhanath, one of the largest stupas in the world, is the heart of Kathmandu's Tibetan community, and Tengboche Monastery stands at almost 3,900 metres in the Khumbu, facing Ama Dablam and Everest.

The main temple is only the heart of a precinct of about 246 hectares containing more than 500 smaller temples, shrines, ashrams and inscriptions, raised over the centuries along both banks of the river. UNESCO lists it as one of the seven monument groups of the Kathmandu Valley World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1979.

Did you know? According to legend, Shiva hid as a bull and sank into the earth; his head emerged here, while his hump appeared at Kedarnath in India.

Its origin is told as myth. According to the Swayambhu Purana, the valley was once a lake, and a lotus sown in it by a Buddha of an earlier age bloomed with a light that had created itself โ€” swayambhu, "self-arisen". The bodhisattva Manjushri then cut through the hills with his sword to drain the water, and the stupa was later built to enshrine the light.

Did you know? According to the Swayambhu Purana, a king of Gauda named Prachandadeva became a monk and raised the stupa to cover and protect the self-arisen light.

The stair is the temple's most famous feature. Its sides are lined with pairs of stone guardians, each pair said to be ten times stronger than the one below it: at the bottom the legendary wrestlers Jai and Pratap, then elephants, then lions, then griffins, and finally two goddesses in the form of a lioness and a tigress.

Did you know? It is one of only two five-storeyed temples in the Kathmandu Valley; the other is the Kumbheshwar Temple in Patan.

Its age is a matter of tradition rather than record. Newar chronicles connect a stupa here with the 5th-century Licchavi king Manadeva, while Tibetan tradition tells of a woman named Samvari who built it with the wealth of her four sons; the king's words of consent, "let it be done" โ€” jarung โ€” and the phrase "slipped from the tongue" โ€” khashor โ€” gave the stupa its Tibetan name, Jarung Khashor.

Did you know? The Tibetan lama Shakya Zangpo is said to have found only an abandoned mound here and restored it, probably giving the stupa its present size.

It is also the spiritual centre of the Sherpa world. Tengboche was founded in 1916 by Lama Gulu, with close ties to Rongbuk Monastery on the Tibetan side of Everest, from which its lineage came, and it was the first celibate monastery of the Nyingma school in the region. Its history has been one of rebuilding.

Did you know? A statue of Shakyamuni Buddha in the main prayer hall rises through two storeys, flanked by figures of Manjushri and Maitreya.

How this list is ranked

Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ€” the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
