In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful natural wonders in Nepal are Mount Everest, Machhapuchhre and Annapurna I. The list covers 5 natural wonders. Last updated 13 October 2026.
Nepal lies where the Indian plate drives beneath Asia, and the collision has pushed up the highest mountains on Earth. Eight of the world's fourteen peaks above 8,000 metres stand wholly or partly within its borders, and between them deep river valleys cut through the range, so that subtropical forest and permanent ice can be seen within a single view.
Mount Everest, the highest point on the planet, rises on the border with China above the Khumbu Glacier. Machhapuchhre, the Fishtail, lifts a sharp double summit above Pokhara and is held sacred, closed to climbers. Annapurna I was the first 8,000-metre peak ever climbed, by a French expedition in 1950. Ama Dablam, whose name means mother's necklace, is a steep pyramid of rock and ice above the trail to Everest. The Mustang Caves are thousands of chambers cut high into the eroded cliffs of the Kali Gandaki valley in Upper Mustang, once used as homes, shrines and tombs.

The top of the world was once the floor of a sea. The summit pyramid is Ordovician limestone, and geologists have found microscopic fragments of crinoids, ancient marine animals, in rock taken from high on the peak. Below it lies the Yellow Band, a tawny layer of marble and schist around 8,200 to 8,600 metres that climbers on the Nepali route must traverse with fixed ropes.
Did you know? Many European mapmakers once wrongly believed the mountain's local name was Gaurishankar, which actually belongs to a different peak to the west.

The mountain is sacred. For the Gurung people and the villagers of Chhomrong it is the home of the god Shiva, and local tradition held that the plume of snow blowing off its summit was the smoke of his incense.
Did you know? Out of reverence for the sanctuary beneath the mountain, Gurung custom long forbade carrying eggs or meat into the basin.

The summit is made of sea floor. The upper mountain is a thick stack of early Palaeozoic sedimentary rock, Ordovician limestone and dolomite of the Nilgiri Formation, laid down on the continental shelf of the ancient Tethys Ocean along the northern edge of India. When India drove into Asia, that shelf was folded and thrust high into the Himalaya; at Annapurna the layers tilt steeply northward as part of a great overturned fold.
Did you know? Herzog's account of the climb, Annapurna, became a bestseller, and expedition member Marcel Ichac filmed the documentary Victoire sur l'Annapurna.

Its steep faces and knife-edge ridges earned it the nickname "the Matterhorn of the Himalayas". The first ascent came on 13 March 1961, when Mike Gill and Wally Romanes of New Zealand, Barry Bishop of the United States and Mike Ward of Britain climbed the Southwest Ridge.
Did you know? Slovenians Vanja Furlan and Tomaลพ Humar won the 1996 Piolet d'Or for a new line on the Northwest Face.

Archaeologists have found that the caves served different purposes over a very long span. The oldest were used as burial chambers from as early as about 1000 BC. Around the 10th century, when the region seems to have been fought over repeatedly, families moved into the caves as living quarters, valuing safety over convenience, and by the 15th century many had become places of meditation.
Did you know? The earliest bodies were laid on wooden beds and adorned with copper jewellery and glass beads made elsewhere, a sign of long-distance trade.
Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
