In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful water wonders in Thailand are Ko Phi Phi Le, Cheow Lan Lake and Maya Bay. The list covers 7 lakes, waterfalls, islands and beaches. Last updated 14 October 2026.
Thailand's water landscapes owe their drama to limestone. Over millions of years the sea and rain dissolved the karst of the south into towers, cliffs and islands that rise vertically from warm shallow water, especially around Phang Nga Bay and the Andaman coast. Inland, the same rock forms jungle-clad peaks around lakes, while the mountains of the west send rivers down in long cascades. Coral sand, clear water and tropical forest complete the picture.
Ko Phi Phi Le, a small uninhabited island south of Krabi, is almost entirely enclosed by limestone cliffs, and Maya Bay, cupped within them, became world-famous through the film The Beach. In Phang Nga Bay, Ko Tapu is a slender pinnacle of rock rising straight out of the sea, known as James Bond Island since The Man with the Golden Gun. Railay Beach, on a peninsula near Krabi cut off from the mainland roads by cliffs, has become one of the best-known rock-climbing destinations in Asia.
Away from the Andaman Sea, Ko Nang Yuan in the Gulf of Thailand is a cluster of three islets joined by a single curving sandbar. Cheow Lan Lake in Khao Sok National Park was formed when a dam flooded a valley, leaving limestone peaks standing in green water. Far to the west, Thi Lo Su Waterfall in Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary pours down a forested slope in many tiers and is often called the largest waterfall in Thailand.

Its most famous corner is Maya Bay, a short arc of white sand, about 250 metres long, held in by cliffs on three sides. The bay became a global image after the film The Beach was shot here in 1999, and the crowds that followed, thousands of visitors and around two hundred boats a day, destroyed most of its coral.
Did you know? During the closure, park staff propagated more than 15,000 corals using only natural methods and replanted them on the damaged reef.

The lake lies largely inside Khao Sok National Park, established in 1980, whose rainforest is one of the most extensive in the south of the peninsula. The karst towers around the shore are limestone hills raised by the collision of tectonic plates and worn by rain over millions of years into needles, overhangs and hidden caves.
Did you know? A 1995 study found that around 52 fish species had vanished from the dammed river, unable to survive in the still reservoir water.

The limestone walls give the bay its drama. They rise straight from the water with overhangs and notches cut by the sea, and they change colour with the light as the day moves on. At night the shallows can shimmer with bioluminescent plankton.
Did you know? Thailand's Supreme Court ruled in September 2022 that 20th Century Fox must pay 10 million baht towards restoring the bay after filming of The Beach.

The falls are not a single drop but a broad wall of many separate streams, tumbling in tiers down the cliff. Seen from the front, they fall into three groups: the left-hand group is the largest, highest and most layered; the central one drops down a sheer face in narrower ribbons; and the right-hand group spreads into many smaller strands over a lower cliff.
Did you know? The sanctuary is part of Thailand's Western Forest Complex and borders Myanmar as well as the Thung Yai Naresuan sanctuary.

The spike stands a short way off Khao Phing Kan, a pair of wooded islets whose name means "hills leaning against each other", and it belongs to the great drowned karst landscape of Phang Nga Bay, where limestone towers and islands rise sheer from the sea, their bases undercut into notches and caves by the water. Ko Ta Pu is the purest expression of that process: a tower eroded so far at sea level that almost nothing is left to hold it up.
Did you know? The sea around it is only a few metres deep and pale green, clouded by silt that rivers carry into Phang Nga Bay from the north.

The peninsula is really four shores in one. West Railay is the classic crescent of pale sand facing the Andaman Sea, with the karst towers framing the sunset. East Railay, where boats from Krabi come in, is fringed with mangroves and muddy at low tide - a working edge rather than a swimming beach.
Did you know? The shrine cave at the foot of the Phra Nang headland is known in Thai as Tham Phra Nang Nok, the outer Princess Cave.

Ko Nang Yuan lies only about 480 metres off the north-west coast of Ko Tao and belongs to the same administrative subdistrict, part of Ko Pha-ngan District in Surat Thani Province. The islands form part of the Chumphon Archipelago on the western side of the Gulf of Thailand. The land itself is state property, owned by the Treasury Department of Thailand's Ministry of Finance and leased to a single operator.
Did you know? Green Rock, a nearby site, is a maze of swim-throughs, canyons, caverns and caves formed by huge granite boulders.
Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
