In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful water wonders in Turkey are Pamukkale, Lake Nemrut and Basilica Cistern. The list covers 5 lakes, waterfalls, islands and beaches. Last updated 13 October 2026.
Turkey's water landscapes owe a great deal to geology and to history. Hot springs rich in calcium rise along the faults of the Aegean hinterland, volcanoes in the east hold lakes in their craters, and four seas wash a coast of coves and cliffs. People have used and honoured this water for millennia, from Roman spas to Byzantine reservoirs and medieval island monasteries.
Pamukkale is a cascade of white travertine terraces built up by mineral springs above the ruins of the Roman city of Hierapolis. Lake Nemrut fills the caldera of a volcano west of Lake Van, with a cold freshwater lake and smaller warm pools fed by hot springs. The Basilica Cistern in Istanbul is a 6th-century underground reservoir whose forest of columns includes two resting on carved Medusa heads. Akdamar Island in Lake Van holds the 10th-century Armenian Church of the Holy Cross, its walls carved with biblical scenes. Butterfly Valley near Fethiye is a beach at the foot of a steep gorge, reached mostly from the sea.

The city built on top of it, Hierapolis, wasn't founded for the view. A shrine had stood on the site since at least the 7th century BC, and the Hellenistic king Eumenes II turned it into a proper spa town in the 2nd century BC on the strength of exactly what still draws people today: a belief that the thermal water cured what regular medicine couldn't.
Did you know? The travertine first settles as a soft gel of calcium carbonate that only later hardens into stone.

Nemrut is a young volcano, its cone still barely eroded, and it has shaped the whole region: its lava flows are what dammed the basin and created Lake Van, the largest lake in Turkey. The crater floor holds several smaller lakes as well, two of them permanent. The smaller, Ilฤฑ Gรถl, sits right over the volcanic fault and is warmed by hot springs along its shore, while hot water seeping into the main lake keeps it from freezing entirely in winter.
Did you know? The lake is fed from below by hot springs, so its deep water is warmer than its surface, and it is slowly turning salty under volcanic influence.

The columns did not come from one quarry or one workshop. Most were salvaged from older buildings across the empire, which is why Ionic and Corinthian capitals stand side by side and why some shafts are smooth while others are carved. One column is covered in a pattern often described as a hen's eye, with slanting branches and teardrops.
Did you know? The Medusa blocks probably came from a late Roman building, and there is no sign they ever served as column bases before being placed here.

What makes it famous is the carving that covers its outer walls. Bands of low relief tell Old Testament stories โ Adam and Eve, Abraham and Isaac, Jonah and the whale, David and Goliath โ alongside Christ, the Virgin and saints. On the west front King Gagik himself holds up a model of the church to offer it to Christ.
Did you know? The church's plan follows a design developed centuries earlier in Armenia, best known from the seventh-century church of St Hripsime at Echmiadzin.
Kelebekler Vadisi

The valley owes its name to its insects. Researchers have recorded 105 species of butterfly from 15 families here, but the emblem is the Jersey tiger, a moth in the local subspecies Euplagia quadripunctaria rhodosensis. The flora is equally rich: 147 plant species from 54 families. A path from the beach leads inland to two small waterfalls about 60 metres high that run all year round.
Did you know? Remains attributed to Perdicia, a settlement of ancient Lycia, lie just above the canyon, tracing human presence here back to around the 4th century BC.
Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
