The Most Remarkable Archaeological Sites in the United States

5 places ยท updated 14 October 2026

In short: By our ranking, the most remarkable archaeological sites in the United States are Cliff Palace, Canyon de Chelly National Monument and Pueblo Bonito. The list covers 5 archaeological sites. Last updated 14 October 2026.

The finest archaeological sites in the United States lie in the canyon country of the Southwest, where a dry climate, overhanging sandstone cliffs and remote locations preserved whole villages of the Ancestral Puebloans and their neighbours. Built of stone, timber and mud mortar, many still stand several storeys high, with roof beams that tree-ring dating can fix almost to the year.

Cliff Palace in Mesa Verde, Colorado, is the largest cliff dwelling in North America, a village of rooms and round kivas tucked under a single sandstone alcove in the 13th century. Pueblo Bonito in Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, is a D-shaped great house built in stages over some three centuries, once rising four or more storeys. Canyon de Chelly in Arizona, still home to Navajo families, shelters ruins such as the White House beneath sheer red walls. Montezuma Castle, a five-storey Sinagua dwelling set high in a limestone cliff above Beaver Creek, has nothing to do with the Aztec ruler whose name it carries.

The best way to feel the place is to go down into it: ranger-led visits descend a century-old sandstone stair and climb out by ladders, about a quarter of a mile in all, and bring you close enough to see fingerprints of the builders' craft in the stonework.

Did you know? To make a level floor, the builders raised a retaining wall along the front of the alcove and filled the space behind it.

The most photographed sight is Spider Rock, a twin sandstone spire rising around 800 feet from the junction of Canyon de Chelly and Monument Canyon; Navajo tradition holds that Spider Woman lives on its summit. Look also for the White House Ruin, a two-level cliff dwelling with one part on the valley floor and another tucked into an alcove some fifty feet above, and for Antelope House and Mummy Cave in Canyon del Muerto. The canyon's history has darker pages too: a Spanish expedition under Antonio Narbona attacked the Navajo here in 1805, and Kit Carson's campaign of 1863โ€“64 drove them from the canyon on the forced march to Bosque Redondo.

Did you know? During the Spanish attack of 1805 led by Antonio Narbona, 115 Navajo were killed and 33 taken captive.

The ruin first entered written record in 1849, when an army expedition under Lieutenant James H. Simpson passed through the canyon. Systematic digging followed between 1896 and 1900 under Richard Wetherill and George H. Pepper, and much of what they recovered went to the American Museum of Natural History in New York. In January 1941 a huge slab of the canyon wall known as Threatening Rock, which the builders had long tried to shore up, finally fell and crushed part of the rear wall. Pueblo Bonito is part of Chaco Culture National Historical Park, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

Did you know? Threatening Rock, which fell in 1941, stood about 97 feet tall and weighed some 30,000 tons; the builders had braced it with supports.

The outside world learned of the ruins in the 1880s. Local rancher Richard Wetherill and his companion Charlie Mason came upon Cliff Palace in December 1888, and in 1891 the young Swedish scientist Gustaf Nordenskiรถld carried out the first methodical excavations, shipping many objects to Europe. Alarm at looting helped push Congress to protect the area, and the decades of stabilisation, excavation and wildfire-revealed discoveries since then have made Mesa Verde one of the best-studied ancient landscapes in North America.

Did you know? Cliff Palace, the largest cliff dwelling in the park, contains around 150 rooms and 23 kivas.

On 8 December 1906 President Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed Montezuma Castle a national monument, one of the first four created under the new Antiquities Act. The dwelling is seen from a short paved trail that loops along the creek below the cliff. A detached unit of the monument about 18 km (11 miles) to the north-east, Montezuma Well, protects a spring-fed limestone sinkhole some 118 metres across, with Sinagua dwellings in its rim and the remains of an irrigation canal that once watered fields below.

Did you know? Its roof beams came mostly from Arizona sycamore, with ash, alder, ponderosa pine, Douglas fir and pinyon pine also used for the ceilings.

How this list is ranked

Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ€” the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
