Church of St. John at Kaneo
Црква „Св. Јован Канео“ - Охрид
Interesting facts
- The church's earliest surviving frescoes, in the apse, are dated to around 1290.
- Among the bishops painted in the apse is Constantine Kabasilas, who became archbishop of Ohrid in the 1260s.
- Proof that the church stood before 1447 comes from an inscription in Ohrid's church of Sts Constantine and Helena, which mentions a neighbouring field owned by St John.
- The church was abandoned for long stretches between the 17th and 19th centuries, and parts of its vaults collapsed before it was restored.
- The oldest dated icon in the church bears the year 1676, a clue historians use to date the start of its long abandonment.
- In 1844 the painter Dičo Zograf made an icon of the Mother of God for the church, during 19th-century work that also repainted the dome.
- Its paintings follow the art of the Komnenian era, with a distinctive local variation that helps scholars date the decoration.
- On the shore below stands a much smaller chapel, the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin, known as Mala Bogorodica.
Why it is worth it
Few buildings anywhere are placed with such instinct. The little church of St John sits on a rocky bluff at the western tip of old Ohrid, where the town's hill drops straight into the lake, and from the path below or from a boat it seems to hang between the cliff and the water. Behind it rise pines and the ridge of the old town; in front lies nothing but the open water of Lake Ohrid, stretching away towards the mountains on the far shore.
The church is dedicated to St John the Theologian, the author of the Book of Revelation, and takes its second name from Kaneo, the fishing quarter that once clustered on the shore beneath it. Nobody knows exactly when it was built. Property records show it existed before 1447, and its architecture points to the thirteenth century, with further work in the fourteenth, before Ottoman rule reached the town. Stylistically it belongs to the late Byzantine world: a compact cross-shaped plan on a rectangular base, walls of light stone framed in red brick, blind arches and bands of ceramic ornament. The octagonal drum of the dome is the building's signature: its roofline breaks into a zigzag of small gables, a detail usually traced to Armenian models and unusual in the region.
Inside, the space is intimate. Fragments of frescoes survive, and restorers in 1964 uncovered paintings in the dome, where Christ Pantocrator looks down from the centre. In the apse the Virgin appears with saints, and a rare local image shows St Clement of Ohrid, the great medieval teacher of the Slavs, alongside St Erasmus. A carved wooden iconostasis closes the sanctuary. The church is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site covering the natural and cultural heritage of the Ohrid region, first inscribed in 1979.
The best approach is on foot: from the excavated early Christian site of Plaošnik a path winds down through the woods and suddenly opens onto the church and the lake together. Seen at sunset, with the water turning silver behind the dome, it is the image of Ohrid that stays with most people.
Getting there
The church is on the western edge of Ohrid's old town, about 1.3 km from the centre; walk along the lakeside boardwalk or descend the forest path from Plaošnik. Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport (OHD) is about 9 km away.

From the encyclopaedia
Saint John the Theologian, Kaneo or simply Saint John at Kaneo is a Macedonian Orthodox church situated on the cliff over Kaneo Beach overlooking Lake Ohrid in the city of Ohrid, North Macedonia. The church is dedicated to John of Patmos, the writer of Revelation, who has been by some considered to be the same person as John the Apostle. The construction date of the church remains unknown but documents detailing the church property suggest that it was built before the year 1447. Archaeologists believe that the church was constructed some time before the rise of the Ottoman Empire very likely in the 13th century. Restoration work in 1964 led to the discovery of frescoes in its dome.
