In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful places in North Macedonia are Lake Ohrid, Ilinden Memorial (Makedonium), Kruševo and Šarena Mosque. The list covers 6 places. Last updated 13 October 2026.
North Macedonia lies on the old routes between the Adriatic and the Aegean, and its landscapes have absorbed Byzantine, Slavic and Ottoman layers in turn. Lake Ohrid, on its south-western border, is among the oldest lakes in Europe, more than a million years old, and its shores became a centre of Slavic Christianity and learning in the Middle Ages. Inland, volcanic tuff and soft sediments have eroded into strange shapes.
Ohrid supplies two of the best-known images in the Balkans. The small Church of St. John at Kaneo stands alone on a cliff above the water, its brick and stone apse facing the lake. At the southern end of the lake, the Monastery of Saint Naum was founded by the saint himself in the early 10th century, beside the springs that feed Ohrid with clear water.
The other places show how varied the country's heritage is. The Šarena Mosque in Tetovo, the 'Painted Mosque', is covered inside and out with floral and geometric decoration rather than tile. Near Kratovo, the Kuklica stone dolls are dozens of earth pillars shaped by erosion; local legend says they are a wedding party turned to stone. And above the hill town of Kruševo, the Makedonium, opened in 1974, commemorates the Ilinden Uprising of 1903 with a sculptural form unlike any traditional monument, part bud, part spaceship, its coloured glass windows lighting a domed hall inside.

North Macedonia · 15.5 km from Pogradec41.033° N 20.717° E

Lake Ohrid is old in a way few lakes are.
Did you know? Around 40 percent of the water leaving the lake simply evaporates; the rest flows north via the Black Drin towards the Adriatic.
Споменик „Илинден“
North Macedonia · 38.3 km from Bitola41.377° N 21.248° E

Above the small mountain town of Kruševo, a white concrete sphere bristling with rounded, tube-like protrusions sits on Gumenja Hill like something that has landed rather than been built.
Did you know? The colourful ceramic mosaics of the amphitheatre, with motifs drawn from Macedonian folk art, are the work of the painter Petar Mazev.
North Macedonia · 0.5 km from Tetovo42.006° N 20.967° E

In the old quarter of Tetovo, beside the Pena river that tumbles down from the Šar Mountains, stands a small mosque covered inside and out in painted ornament.
Did you know? Unlike most Ottoman mosques, it has no dome: the single square prayer hall is covered only by its tiled roof.
Манастир „Св. Наум“ - Охрид
North Macedonia · 6.6 km from Pogradec40.914° N 20.741° E

At the far southern end of Lake Ohrid, where the shoreline turns toward Albania, the monastery of Saint Naum sits on a rocky rise above the water, its small stone church crowned by two domes and surrounded by gardens and the springs that feed the lake. Its story reaches back to the very beginnings of Slavic literacy.
Did you know? The builders of the present church reused 6th-century carved stones, spolia from older buildings, in its fabric.
Камени Кукли
North Macedonia42.124° N 22.050° E

On a bare hillside above the Kriva River valley in north-eastern North Macedonia, more than a hundred stone figures stand in loose crowds like guests at an outdoor gathering.
Did you know? The nearby town of Kratovo sits inside the crater of an extinct volcano, part of the same volcanic landscape whose rocks gave rise to the pillars.
Црква „Св. Јован Канео“ - Охрид
North Macedonia · 25.7 km from Pogradec41.111° N 20.789° E

Few buildings anywhere are placed with such instinct. The little church of St John sits on a rocky bluff at the western tip of old Ohrid, where the town's hill drops straight into the lake, and from the path below or from a boat it seems to hang between the cliff and the water.
Did you know? The church was abandoned for long stretches between the 17th and 19th centuries, and parts of its vaults collapsed before it was restored.
Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented — the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
