Ilinden Memorial (Makedonium), Kruševo
Споменик „Илинден“
Interesting facts
- The dome is often likened to a bozdogan, a spiked Ottoman-era war mace, and stands on Gumenja at about 1,320 metres above sea level.
- Five broken chains at the start of the route are meant to stand for the five centuries of Ottoman rule over Macedonia.
- The underground crypt holds 58 tube-like forms, each inscribed with names of revolutionaries, events and dates from the Ilinden period.
- The colourful ceramic mosaics of the amphitheatre, with motifs drawn from Macedonian folk art, are the work of the painter Petar Mazev.
- The four great windows of the dome each look towards a place tied to the uprising, among them the Sliva memorial, Mečkin Kamen and the Pelagonia plain.
- A bust of the pop singer Toše Proeski, who grew up in Kruševo and died in a car crash in 2007 aged 26, stands inside the dome.
- The oratorio Sun of the Ancient Land by the composer Toma Prošev is associated with the monument and is heard within its dome.
- The decision to hold a design competition for the monument was issued in June 1968, six years before its opening.
- The memorial complex spreads over about 12 hectares, leading visitors from the broken chains through the crypt and amphitheatre up to the dome.
Why it is worth it
Above the small mountain town of Kruševo, a white concrete sphere bristling with rounded, tube-like protrusions sits on Gumenja Hill like something that has landed rather than been built. This is the Ilinden memorial, known locally as the Makedonium, and it is one of the most original works of the Yugoslav era of memorial architecture: part sculpture, part building, and quite unlike anything else in North Macedonia.
It commemorates two moments of Macedonian history. The first is the Ilinden Uprising against Ottoman rule, launched on 2 August 1903, the feast of St Elijah, during which insurgents proclaimed the short-lived Kruševo Republic in this town; it lasted less than two weeks before being crushed. The second is the partisan struggle of the Second World War. The complex was designed by the husband-and-wife team Jordan and Iskra Grabul and opened on 2 August 1974, the anniversary of both the uprising and the 1944 founding assembly of the Macedonian state.
The dome is about 25 metres tall. Its four largest protrusions are closed by elliptical stained-glass windows by the painter Borko Lazeski, abstract compositions in deep colour that are often read as the four seasons; when the sun is out they flood the white interior with patches of red, blue and gold. Inside lie the tomb of Nikola Karev, president of the Kruševo Republic, placed here in 1990, and a series of abstract reliefs by Jordan Grabul. The approach is part of the experience: visitors pass a sculpture group of broken chains, a crypt lined with bronze plaques recording the fighters and battles, and a small amphitheatre with walls of vivid mosaic before reaching the sphere itself.
The complex was restored between 2016 and 2018 and is well kept. A memorial gathering is held on the site every 2 August. Kruševo itself, one of the highest towns in the country, is known for its nineteenth-century merchant houses, which make a striking counterpoint to the space-age form on the hill.
Getting there
The memorial is at the northern edge of Kruševo, reached by road from Prilep, the nearest larger town, about 26 km away as the crow flies. The nearest airport is Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport (OHD), roughly 48 km in a straight line over the mountains. There is a car park below the complex, from which a path leads uphill past the crypt and amphitheatre to the dome.
