In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful places in Algeria are Tassili n'Ajjer, Djemila and Timgad. The list covers 7 places. Last updated 13 October 2026.
Algeria is the largest country in Africa, and most of it is Sahara โ but not the endless sand of the imagination. In the south the desert breaks into volcanic peaks and eroded sandstone plateaus that held water, grazing animals and people long before the climate dried. In the north, along the Tell and the Aurรจs mountains, Rome built some of its most complete provincial towns, and later Berber villages clung to the canyon walls.
Tassili n'Ajjer is the great prize of the south: a plateau of sandstone forests and arches whose rock shelters hold thousands of paintings and engravings of cattle herds, giraffes, hunters and dancers, a record of a green Sahara. Further into the Hoggar, Assekrem looks out over a field of volcanic needles, and the hermitage of Charles de Foucauld still stands on its summit.
The Roman north is just as remarkable. Timgad, founded under Trajan around 100 AD, preserves its chessboard of streets and a triumphal arch almost as the surveyors laid them out. Djemila, ancient Cuicul, spreads its forum, temples and baths along a mountain ridge. In the Aurรจs, Ghoufi Canyon is lined with abandoned stone villages built into the cliff ledges above a ribbon of palm gardens. Constantine, the city on a rock, is crossed by Pont Sidi M'Cid, a suspension bridge strung high over the Rhumel gorge in 1912, and at Hammam Meskhoutine some of the hottest springs in the region spill over terraces of white mineral deposits.

Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
