In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful places in Tanzania are Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Serengeti National Park and Mount Kilimanjaro. The list covers 6 places. Last updated 13 October 2026.
Tanzania straddles the East African Rift, where the continent is slowly pulling apart. Along the rift, the crust has cracked and sunk into valleys and soda lakes, and magma has built some of Africa's greatest volcanoes, from the snow-capped dome of Kilimanjaro to craters that now hold whole ecosystems. On the coast, a different story unfolded: for centuries Swahili city-states traded gold, ivory and porcelain across the Indian Ocean and built in coral stone.
Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa at 5,895 metres, rises alone from the plains near the Kenyan border, its summit crater on the volcano Kibo. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area centres on a vast volcanic caldera, among the largest unbroken ones in the world, whose floor is home to lions, elephants, rhinos and great herds of grazing animals. The area also includes Olduvai Gorge, where some of the earliest traces of human ancestors have been found.
To the north, Ol Doinyo Lengai is the only active volcano known to erupt natrocarbonatite lava, which flows black and turns white within days as it reacts with moisture in the air. Below it, Lake Natron is a shallow, intensely alkaline lake whose waters turn red and pink from salt-loving microorganisms, and which is the main breeding ground of the lesser flamingo. On an island off the southern coast, Kilwa Kisiwani preserves the ruins of a medieval Swahili port, including the Great Mosque and the palace of Husuni Kubwa, praised by Ibn Battuta when he visited in the fourteenth century.

Ngorongoro Crater is the centrepiece of this protected area in northern Tanzania. It is a volcanic caldera about 610 metres deep with a floor of roughly 260 square kilometres, formed two to three million years ago when a large volcano collapsed on itself.
Did you know? No European is known to have entered the crater before 1892, when the Austrian explorer Oscar Baumann reached it.

5 million wildebeest, a quarter of a million zebra and hundreds of thousands of Thomson's gazelle moving in a yearly circuit between northern Tanzania and Kenya's Maasai Mara.
Did you know? Poaching cut the park's eastern black rhinos to about ten animals in the 1980s, and fewer than 70 survive there today.

Kilimanjaro rises alone out of the plains of northern Tanzania, 5,895 metres high and some 4,900 metres above its own base. It is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain on Earth, a dormant stratovolcano built by more than two million years of eruptions along the East African Rift.
Did you know? Ice cores from the summit's Northern Ice Field show the ice there began forming about 11,700 years ago.

Every other active volcano on Earth erupts some form of silicate lava โ basalt, andesite, something built around conventional molten rock. Ol Doinyo Lengai is the only one that does not.
Did you know? The volcano exhales roughly 80 kilograms of carbon dioxide every second, making it a significant natural source of volcanic CO2.

Lake Natron's chemistry starts next door, at Ol Doinyo Lengai โ the Maasai's 'Mountain of God' and one of the only volcanoes on Earth erupting an unusual carbonatite lava.
Did you know? The lake is up to 57 kilometres long and 22 kilometres wide, yet less than three metres deep, which is why it heats up and evaporates so quickly.

Kilwa Kisiwani is a small island off the southern coast of Tanzania whose ruins mark what was once the most powerful city on the Swahili Coast.
Did you know? Husuni Kubwa had an octagonal pool and rooms about three metres high, and a Chinese Yuan dynasty flask from around 1300 was found among its ruins.
Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
