In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful places in Madagascar are Isalo National Park, Tsingy de Bemaraha Strict Nature Reserve and Avenue of the Baobabs. The list covers 5 places. Last updated 13 October 2026.
Madagascar split from the Indian landmass tens of millions of years ago and has been an island ever since, so its plants and animals evolved in isolation: lemurs, chameleons and six of the world's species of baobab are found here and almost nowhere else. The rocks are just as distinctive, from sandstone massifs carved into canyons to limestone eroded into fields of razor-sharp pinnacles.
The Tsingy de Bemaraha in the west is the most famous of those limestone forests, a maze of grey blades and narrow chasms where rain has dissolved the rock along its cracks. In the far north, the Red Tsingy are a smaller, softer version, spires of red laterite and sandstone shaped by erosion. In the south, Isalo National Park sets eroded Jurassic sandstone ridges, canyons and natural pools against open grassland.
Near Morondava, the Avenue of the Baobabs lines a dirt road with Grandidier's baobabs, their tall bare trunks and flat crowns most striking at sunrise and sunset. Off the northwest coast, Nosy Iranja is two islands joined by a long sandbar that appears at low tide, with turtles nesting on the beaches.

Tsingy is a Malagasy word usually glossed as "where one cannot walk barefoot", and the landscape it names in western Madagascar earns it. On the Bemaraha plateau, rain has etched a thick limestone bed from above while groundwater dissolved it along fractures from below.
Did you know? The karst is carved into a Middle Jurassic limestone sequence some 300 to 500 metres thick of the Bajocian and Bathonian stages.

A short stretch of road in western Madagascar holds one of the strangest and most photographed tree groups on earth.
Did you know? Trunks can reach about three metres across, topped by a flat crown of horizontal branches.

Nosy Iranja is really two islands and the ribbon of sand that joins them. Off the northwestern coast of Madagascar, in the Mozambique Channel, the larger island, Nosy Iranja Be, and its small wooded neighbour, Nosy Iranja Kely, are connected at low tide by a bar of white sand about two kilometres long.
Did you know? Hawksbill nesting is rare across the Comoros Basin, which gives the island's hawksbill beaches unusual conservation value.
Tsingy Rouge
Madagascar12.639ยฐ S 49.497ยฐ E

The Red Tsingy, known locally as the Tsingy Rouge, is a valley of slender red spires in the far north of Madagascar, about 60 kilometres south of the port of Antsiranana near the village of Sadjoavato.
Did you know? The Irodo River, whose erosion carved the site, rises in the Ambohitra massif, better known as Amber Mountain.
Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
