In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful places in Gujarat are Rani ki Vav, Modhera Sun Temple and Adalaj Stepwell. The list covers 5 places. Last updated 13 October 2026.
Gujarat is a dry land on India's western edge, where monsoon rain comes for a few months and must last the whole year. That fact shaped its finest architecture: stepwells that descend storey by storey to the water table, cool and richly carved, built by queens, merchants and rulers as acts of charity. The region's long maritime trade and its strong Jain community brought wealth and a tradition of intricate stone carving that runs from temples to wells.
Rani ki Vav at Patan, built in the 11th century in memory of a Solanki king, is the grandest of all stepwells, with hundreds of sculptures of gods and celestial women lining its terraces; it was silted up for centuries, which helped preserve it. Adalaj, near Ahmedabad, completed in 1498, descends five levels through octagonal landings where light falls in shafts onto the carving. The Modhera Sun Temple, from the same Solanki era, is set behind a great stepped tank and was aligned so that the rising sun at the equinoxes reaches its sanctum.
The other two places show the extremes of Gujarat. Shatrunjaya hill above Palitana is crowded with Jain temples, reached by thousands of steps and visited by pilgrims at dawn. In the far northwest, the Great Rann of Kutch is a seasonal salt marsh: flooded in the monsoon, it dries into a white crust that stretches to the horizon.

Rani ki Vav, the "Queen's Stepwell" in Patan, Gujarat, is a well turned into an inverted temple.
Did you know? Its interlocking frame of pillars, beams and brackets was designed to absorb earthquake shocks, with 2-metre stone braces spanning the corridor against soil pressure.

The Sun Temple at Modhera is one of the great stone compositions of medieval India, built for Surya, the sun god, under the Chaulukya kings of Gujarat. An inscription dates the shrine to 1026โ27, in the reign of Bhima I, and the open assembly hall in front of it was added later in the same century.
Did you know? Surya is shown standing with a lotus in each hand, in a chariot drawn by seven horses.

From ground level there is almost nothing to see at Adalaj: a low stone platform, a few domed pavilions, an opening in the earth. The building only reveals itself as you go down.
Did you know? The well is also known as Rudabai's Vav, after the queen credited as its patron; vav is the Gujarati word for a stepwell.

For most of the year the Great Rann of Kutch is one of the emptiest places in India: some 7,500 square kilometres of flat, salty clay in the far west of Gujarat, stretching north towards the border with Pakistan.
Did you know? A great earthquake in 1819 shifted a branch of the Indus delta and cut the Rann off from the river's water.

Shatrunjaya is a hill covered in temples. On the summit and ridges above the town of Palitana in Gujarat stand almost 900 Jain shrines, from tiny niches to large temples with carved spires, packed so closely that from a distance the crest looks like a city of carved stone.
Did you know? In 1656 the Mughal prince Murad Bakhsh granted the hill to the Jain merchant Shantidas Jhaveri of Ahmedabad.
Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
