In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful places in Ladakh are Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri and Thikse Monastery. The list covers 5 places. Last updated 14 October 2026.
Ladakh is a high-altitude cold desert between the Himalaya and the Karakoram, where the Indus runs through bare mountains and villages exist only where streams make irrigation possible. Little rain crosses the Himalaya, so the landscape is mineral and vivid, with brown and ochre slopes, white peaks and deep blue sky. Culturally it belongs to the Tibetan Buddhist world, and its monasteries, called gompas, are often built on crags above the valley floors.
Pangong Tso is a long, narrow lake at more than 4,200 metres whose water shifts between turquoise and deep blue as the light changes. Tso Moriri, in the Changthang plateau further south, is a quieter high lake ringed by mountains, a breeding ground for bar-headed geese.
The monasteries are equally striking. Thikse, on a hill above the Indus valley, rises in tiers of white buildings often compared with the Potala Palace in Lhasa, and houses a large statue of Maitreya, the future Buddha. Lamayuru, one of the oldest monasteries in Ladakh, stands above eroded clay formations known locally as moonland. In remote Zanskar, Phuktal Monastery is built around a cave in a cliff face, its buildings hanging like a honeycomb above a gorge.

Pangong Tso is a long, narrow lake at about 4,300 metres on the border between western Tibet and Ladakh, one of the highest large lakes in the world.
Did you know? Old shorelines above the present water level, marked by a five-metre layer of mud and sand, show the lake has shrunk in recent geological time.

Thikse rises out of a rocky hill above the Indus like a town stacked on a single slope: white and ochre blocks climb in terraces to red-painted chapels at the top, and the whole mass narrows as it climbs.
Did you know? The monastery oversees ten other monasteries, among them Diskit in the Nubra valley, Spituk, Likir and Stok.

Lamayuru stands on a ridge above a valley of eroded, pale yellow clay and rock in western Ladakh, a landscape so bare and wrinkled that it is widely known as the "moonland".
Did you know? During its festivals, monks from the surrounding gompas gather at Lamayuru to pray together with the resident community.

Phuktal looks less built than grown: a cluster of whitewashed cells, chapels and prayer halls stacked up the face of a cliff in the Lungnak gorge of south-eastern Zanskar, spilling out of the mouth of a great natural cave like a honeycomb.
Did you know? In July 2016 seven solar micro-grids with more than 270 LED bulbs brought electric light to about 80 rooms of the monastery.
Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
