In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful places in Tamil Nadu are Meenakshi Temple, Brihadisvara Temple, Thanjavur and Nilgiri Mountain Railway. The list covers 6 places. Last updated 13 October 2026.
Tamil Nadu is the homeland of Dravidian temple architecture, developed over more than a thousand years by the Pallava, Chola, Pandya and Nayak dynasties. Here the temple is not a single building but a whole sacred precinct, enclosed by concentric walls and entered through gopurams, towering gateways covered in sculpted and painted figures. Many of the great temples are still in active worship, so ritual, music and festivals continue in spaces built centuries ago.
At Mahabalipuram on the coast, the Pallavas of the seventh and eighth centuries carved temples from single boulders, cut the vast relief of the Descent of the Ganges into a rock face and raised the Shore Temple above the waves. Under the Cholas, the Brihadisvara Temple in Thanjavur, completed in 1010 under Rajaraja I, rose to a granite tower of unprecedented height crowned by a single massive capstone.
Later temples spread outward rather than upward. The Meenakshi Temple in Madurai is a city within a city, its many gopurams crowded with brightly painted deities. Srirangam, on an island in the Kaveri, is one of the largest functioning Hindu temple complexes in the world, with seven concentric enclosures. The Ramanathaswamy Temple on Rameswaram island is known for its long pillared corridors. A different kind of landmark climbs into the hills: the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a rack railway that carries trains from the plains up to Ooty through forest, tunnels and tea gardens.

The temple's founding story is a lot stranger than the architecture alone suggests. According to tradition, a Pandya king and queen had a daughter born with three breasts, and it had been foretold that the third would disappear the moment she met the man she was destined to marry.

Rajaraja I, the Chola emperor who dominated south India at the turn of the first millennium, built this temple to Shiva at Thanjavur between 1003 and 1010 and named it after himself: Rajarajesvaram. Locals simply call it the Big Temple, Periya Kovil, and the name is fair.
Did you know? The Archaeological Survey of India pioneered a method to lift 16 Nayak-era paintings off the older Chola frescoes and remount them on fibreglass panels.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway climbs from the plains of Tamil Nadu into the Blue Mountains on a metre-gauge line 46 km long, and on its steepest stretch it needs a toothed rack to do it.
Did you know? On the rack section the steam locomotive is coupled at the downhill end, pushing the carriages up the mountain rather than pulling them.

Mahabalipuram, officially Mamallapuram, is a small resort town on the Coromandel Coast of Tamil Nadu. Its official name honours the 7th-century king Narasimhavarman I, known as Mamalla, the "great wrestler".
Did you know? Scholars still debate whether the central ascetic of the relief is Arjuna seeking a divine weapon or Bhagiratha bringing the Ganges to earth.

Twenty-one gopurams, tiered gateway towers crowded with painted sculpture, rise in procession across a river island in the Kaveri, and the tallest of them, the thirteen-storey Rajagopuram, reaches about 73 metres.

On the island of Rameswaram, at the very tip of the Indian mainland's reach towards Sri Lanka, stands one of the holiest shrines of Shiva and the southernmost of the twelve Jyotirlingas.
Did you know? Statues of Muthuramalinga Sethupathi and his two chief ministers stand at the western entrance to the great corridor he built.
Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
