The Most Beautiful Natural Wonders in India

7 places ยท updated 14 October 2026

In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful natural wonders in India are Nanda Devi, Kanchenjunga and Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka. The list covers 7 natural wonders. Last updated 14 October 2026.

India's natural wonders span almost every kind of landscape the planet makes. In the north the Himalaya, still rising as the Indian plate pushes into Asia, carry some of the highest peaks on Earth; in the west the Deccan plateau is built of thick layers of basalt laid down by ancient eruptions; and between them lie the salt flats and deserts of Gujarat and Rajasthan. The monsoon then reshapes it all each year, filling rivers, flooding marshes and carving gorges.

Kanchenjunga, at 8,586 metres the third-highest mountain in the world, rises on the border of Sikkim and is revered there as a guardian deity. Nanda Devi, the highest peak entirely within India, stands at the centre of a ring of summits that long kept its inner sanctuary almost unreachable. Far to the south, Lonar Lake in Maharashtra fills a crater made by a meteorite impact in Deccan basalt, its water both salty and alkaline.

Other wonders are shaped by water and time. The Great Rann of Kutch turns into a seasonal sea during the monsoon and dries into a vast white crust of salt. At Bhedaghat near Jabalpur, the Narmada flows through a gorge of gleaming marble cliffs known as the Marble Rocks. In the sandstone outcrops of Bhimbetka in Madhya Pradesh, rock shelters hold paintings of animals, hunters and dancers, the oldest of them thought to date back many thousands of years.

The name is usually rendered as "Bliss-Giving Goddess", and the peak is revered as the patron deity of the Garhwal and Kumaon hills. Until surveys in 1808 showed Dhaulagiri to be taller, Nanda Devi was believed to be the highest mountain on Earth. Simply reaching its foot took half a century: W. W.

Did you know? The 1936 expedition was strikingly light: just seven climbers, no fixed ropes, and no Sherpa support above roughly 6,200 metres.

The mountain is sacred in both Sikkim and Nepal, and that has shaped its climbing history. On 25 May 1955 the British climbers Joe Brown and George Band made the first ascent but stopped just short of the true top, honouring a promise to the Chogyal, the ruler of Sikkim, that the summit itself would be left untouched.

Did you know? Poland's Jerzy Kukuczka and Krzysztof Wielicki made the first winter ascent on 11 January 1986, following the line of the 1955 pioneers.

More than 750 shelters are spread across seven hills, with the largest clusters on Bhimbetka hill itself and on Lakha Juar. The earliest images are linear figures; later artists worked in red, white and yellow, and later still with hematite, manganese oxide and charcoal.

Did you know? One painting shows a bison charging a hunter while his two companions stand by helplessly; another shows a band of hunters running from a rhinoceros.

Geologists see the Rann as a former arm of the Arabian Sea, cut off by uplift of the land and turned first into a shallow lake and then into this seasonal salt marsh. Its strangeness lies in its changes of mood. At midday the white plain glares under a hard sky; at sunset it turns pink and gold; and on full-moon nights the salt glows silver, the best-loved sight of the whole place.

Did you know? Summer temperatures here have peaked at about 49.5 ยฐC, yet winter nights can drop below freezing.

The age of the impact has been debated. Earlier studies placed it at around 52,000 years ago; later argon dating suggested some 570,000 years, a result disputed because of possible contamination. The lake has no outlet, and its water is strongly alkaline and salty. In June 2020 it turned from green to pinkish red within a few days โ€” a bloom of salt-loving microorganisms after a rise in salinity โ€” and the pictures went around the world.

Did you know? The lake water is strongly alkaline, with a pH usually measured between about 9 and 10.5.

The caves belong to the Maurya Empire of the 3rd century BCE. Four are cut into Barabar Hill and three more into neighbouring Nagarjuni Hill, about a mile and a half away. Inscriptions in Brahmi script record that the emperor Ashoka, under his title Piyadasi, gave several of them to the Ajivikas, an ascetic movement contemporary with early Buddhism and Jainism that has since vanished; one inscription is dated to the twelfth year of his reign.

Local memory keeps the time when the gorge was much narrower: one part is still called Bandar Kudni, "the monkeys' leap", from the days when monkeys could jump from one side to the other. Rowing boats take visitors up between the walls, and full-moon nights are considered the finest time to be on the water. Kartik Purnima brings ritual bathing and boating, and Sharad Purnima is associated with healing.

Did you know? Scholar David Gordon White suggests the yogini temple was probably the largest building project of the Kalachuri dynasty.

How this list is ranked

Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ€” the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.

Questions people ask

What are the most beautiful natural wonders in India?
On our list, Nanda Devi ranks first, followed by Kanchenjunga and Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka.
How was Lonar Lake formed?
Lonar Lake fills a crater created by a meteorite striking the basalt of the Deccan plateau. It is one of very few known impact craters formed in basaltic rock, which makes it valuable for comparison with craters on the Moon and Mars.
Why does the Great Rann of Kutch turn white?
During the monsoon the low-lying Rann is flooded by seawater and rain. When the water evaporates in the dry season, it leaves behind a thick crust of salt that stretches to the horizon.
How old are the rock paintings at Bhimbetka?
The rock shelters of Bhimbetka contain paintings from many periods. The oldest are attributed to the Mesolithic and are thought to be around ten thousand years old, making them among the earliest traces of human art in India.
How many natural wonders are on this list in India?
The list covers 7 natural wonders.
