In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful natural wonders in Israel are Makhtesh Ramon, Rosh HaNikra grottoes and Avshalom Cave. The list covers 5 natural wonders. Last updated 13 October 2026.
Israel's natural wonders are made of rock rather than water. In the Negev desert, erosion has carved enormous craters and canyons into layers of limestone and sandstone, while on the coast and in the hills the soft limestone has been hollowed into grottoes and caves. Within a small territory, desert cliffs and Mediterranean shore stand only a few hours apart.
Makhtesh Ramon is the largest of the Negev's erosion craters, a valley some 40 kilometres long ringed by cliffs and showing rocks of many colours. The Rosh HaNikra grottoes are tunnels cut by the sea into white chalk cliffs on the northern coast, filled with blue light. Avshalom Cave, discovered by chance in 1968 during quarrying near Beit Shemesh, is densely packed with stalactites and stalagmites. Ein Avdat is a narrow canyon in the Zin valley where a spring feeds pools beneath pale limestone walls, frequented by ibex. Solomon's Pillars in the Timna Valley are huge sandstone columns eroded from a cliff face in a landscape of ancient copper mines.

The result is a geological cross-section open to the sky. The floor and walls expose rock layers up to about 200 million years old, from the time when the Negev lay under the Tethys Ocean. In the north-east, the Ammonite Wall was once studded with spiral fossils of those ancient seas, though many have been taken.
Did you know? By 1995 the reintroduced wild ass herd in the makhtesh had grown to about 40 adults.

The headland has been a boundary and a passage for millennia. The Book of Maccabees mentions the "Ladder of Tyre" in this area as a northern border, and Josephus described the cape as the limit of Acre's territory. In 1941 and 1942, during the Second World War, South African and New Zealand army engineers cut railway tunnels through the cliff to carry a line linking Haifa with Beirut, and with it the rail networks of Egypt, Lebanon and beyond.
Did you know? The Hebrew name adapts the Arabic Ras an-Naqoura, named after the Lebanese town just to the north, and reads its second word as nikra, a grotto or cleft.

The cave lies on the western slope of Mount Ye'ela, near the Sorek valley that gives it its scientific name, about 385 metres above sea level. The limestone here began to be dissolved and redeposited millions of years ago, and some of the formations in the chamber have been dated to more than 300,000 years.
Did you know? About a million people visited in the first three years after the cave opened in 1977, even though visits had to be arranged in advance.

The canyon is part of Nahal Zin, the largest dry riverbed of the Negev, which runs for some 120 kilometres from the edge of Makhtesh Ramon north and then east; erosion carved this section into a gorge. Several springs feed it. At the southern end, Ein Ma'arif drops through a series of falls and pools, overlooked by the remains of a Byzantine fortress.
Did you know? Nearby Avdat, which gave the canyon its name, had a temple built in 9 BC to the deified Nabataean king Obodas I.

The name is a modern one. In the 1930s the archaeologist Nelson Glueck linked the copper mines of Timna with King Solomon and called the area "King Solomon's Mines", an attribution that has not held up: radiocarbon dating of the 10th-century BCE workings points instead to the Edomites. Copper had in fact been mined in the valley since the 6th or 5th millennium BCE.
Did you know? Smelting camps near the pillars yielded what may be the earliest bones of domesticated camels found in Israel, dated to around 930 BCE.
Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.
